I think most of us want media updates to look at the new features and additions, not so much for any graphical improvements, as it is true that the retail game can't look substantially better than the mod. Some levels are already being recycled, like Kessel and Krasnyi, with no changes apparent graphically, so the core graphics will be similar I imagine.
However, the devs have also stated that the animation system has been improved, so the overall look to the game will be more polished.
