Personally, I don't get how anyone could think that menus that are specifically made for maximum comfort on a console (e.g. Fable 2, Oblivion) are actually more comfortable than a menu like, say, Morrowind.
They're not. They are horrible, and I don't care if I'm inconvenienced by having to scroll through stuff using the cursor keys or the digi-pad...
What's wrong with pushing a cursor around with a control stick? They expect you to be able to aim like with a mouse, how come you can't be trusted to show the same dexterity while operating a menu? One that pauses the game, no less.
Anyway, I got through Gothic 1 and 2 just fine, I learned to live with the menu in Fable and even the ones in Fable 2 and Oblivion, although those two still annoy me. I'll learn to live with the one in Skyrim.
But still, I wonder who came up with these weird non-ergonomic design principles for controller operated menus everyone seems to be following now (even for PC versions) and if a jury would convict me, should I strange him.
