GAME OF THE ****ING YEAR.

So much ****ing epic in the worldbuilding. It really looks like they're taking a lesson from Morrowind and bringing back the incredible worldbuilding and atmosphere.

TWO ****ING DAYS, GUYS!

Please, PLEASE, don't make claims like this before the game is actually out and you've played it for a substantial amount of time.

>Implying that there can be a clear winner for something as heavily subjective as "Game of the Year".

I don't give a **** what the game journalists tout as game of the year, all the big-budget titles that have come out this year have been ****, or look like they're going to be ****. None of them look to match the scope, scale, or depth that seem to be present in Skyrim.

Considering my primary method of judging a game involves how much time I'm willing to immerse myself in the game's world, Skyrim is already frontrunner for game of the year in my books.

Saints Row: The Third is the only other game that even comes close to being a contender, and that's for simple fun-factor. Hard to not enjoy yourself while skydiving out of a Harrier dressed as a luchador to tackle a fleeing old woman. Still, I wouldn't tout Saints as an epic, sweeping masterpiece of world-building, more like an Adult Swim Cartoon Supervillian simulator.

You're the one who brought GOTY into the discussion. Doesn't matter if it's GOTY by your standards or by that of the game journalists.

Deeming a game to be GOTY before you've played it is just ridiculous.

And say the game has a lot of bugs. Maybe the combat system feels off to you. Maybe the story is not that immersive. There could be a ton of things wrong with the game. I'm not saying there will be, but there might.

And say the game has a lot of bugs.

It's a Bethesda game. It's going to be bugged out the *** at launch. It's a given.

Maybe the combat system feels off to you.

This isn't an FPS, where the whole thing centers on combat. Oblivion and Morrowind both had pretty lackluster combat systems, but they more than made up for it with world depth and tickling that desire for immersion that I crave so badly.

Maybe the story is not that immersive.

Again, Bethesda game. The story is going to be so-so. Not what I'm in it for. I'm in it to lose myself in a facinating world filled up to the ears with interesting lore, breathtaking landscapes, and a level of interactivity unheard of in most other games. Ambition is the name of the game here.

There could be a ton of things wrong with the game. I'm not saying there will be, but there might.

I'm saying there will be. Of course there will be. It's a Bethesda game. It's taken as red.

The difference is that Bethesda games are buggy and broken -because- they're so epic and ambitious in scope, and their core mechanics are solid enough that it takes very little from the modders to get them up to spec. Modded Morrowind was the most amazing RPG of it's generation. Modded Oblivion was the most amazing RPG of this generation, and Skyrim is going to take it's place. All of the design decisions for Skyrim look spot on, everything looks like it's been improved, and the world is one I simply can't wait to dive into.

You're talking to someone who actually read the vast majority of the books in Oblivion and Morrowind, who's genuinely invested in the Elder Scrolls universe, and who enjoys the lore immensely. Getting the opportunity to dive back into the game, examine the repercussions of the past games, and explore the universe even more is enough to push it all the way to the top slot for my GOTY candidate. There's really no competition.

I mean seriously, name one other game that came out this year that even comes close to offering the depth and complexity of the world Skyrim is promising us? Knowing Bethesda, they'll deliver. They didn't make the TWI mistake of revealing information before it was finished, the press releases they've let out relate to stuff that has already been fully implemented into the game. Leaks of reviewer copies are already showing off features and gameplay that haven't been revealed yet (like the werewolf bit above), and they look just as good, if not better, than promised.

Skyrim = GOTY. Hands down. Nothing else even comes close.

Well, clearly you're a huge fan of the series. I have a more objective view on it and won't overlook the potential shortcomings as easily as you might.

Not saying it won't be a great game, in fact its one of the games, if not the game, I most look forward to playing this year.

I just refuse to claim something is GOTY before actually playing it for a good while.

I am torn as to what sort of character I should play my first time in the game. I am thinking a Khajiit thief/assassin type character or my typical brute bristling with weapons and armor.

Every RPG game I play brutes (warrior type), but I think this time around I should try something completely different.

Battlemage ftw. Conjure a demon to fight for you and stand back ;)

I think I'm going with a mage this time around and spec for maximum DPS. Usually I play an archer.

Unless melee combat is done really well (much better than Oblivion), than I really don't feel like messing around with it. Besides, my FPS skills will help me get lots of headshots with my fireballs. :D

In my last game in Oblivion I made a summoner, I modded the game to allow several summons at once, then I just cast invisibility on myself, entered whatever place I wanted to wreck, and leave everything to my creatures, trollest character ever. =P

Edit: I also had a rod with a crystal ball on one end, emitting red light, that served as a torch and made me look awesome and evil. =)

I love assasin characters in all games and especially in the TES series nothing beats sneaking up on someone and cutting his throat :)

The problem I have is not what character I'm going to make, but how I intend to try playing 50 different type of playstyles that I want to play all simultaneously.

At the very least I'll start with a pure melee warrior, pure mage, and pure assassin and work from there.

I'm impressed with people who can consistently let their conjured creatures do the work for them. I end up having to deal 90% of the damage anyway, and I have some enemies face filling up my screen so I hardly see what's going on around me.

Maybe if there was a way to sing a jolly sea shanty while I have 50 calico cats killing a demon...
