Well I heard that the GeForce 8 series will run it well, but i'm not sure. Would this card work, i'm thinking of buying it:

Hey im using the mobile version of the 8600GT 256 and its works well and is playable at low/medium settings, so im sure this card would run fine for ~medium settings. Though im not uptodate with prices etc you may be able to get a 8800 card for only a little more if you shop arround a bit.
Oh and Towne im not really familier with the 8400 but i believe you would only get a playable framerate at low settings, but remember you can always try the demo which has been updated to one of the newer (and better) patches.

Get a 8800gts512mb,I didnt think the 640mb are still for sale!,the512mb is the faster card,and will give 8800GTX performance
Yes, the 512 MB version uses the newer G92 core, which will give better performance than the G80 core versions (320 and 640 MB ones)

If thats your price bracket I'd try and stump the little extra for an 8800GT,better value and performance,I think their around the 160/180 euro mark now,that GTS640mb you posted and saod was around the same price would even better than the 8600GT,its still a good card(640),its just that newer 8800's are the better performers.
Yup. Got bored so ive had a wiki about and though im not sure how this properly translates into performance in the real world the best 8600 has a 'Theoretical Shader Processing Rate' of 139.2gigaflops while the worst 8800 has 345.6gigaflops with the higher range cards reaching >500.

i need to get a desktop...I played the demo on the lowest settings and ran great. Even at lowest looks about the same as OFP lol . I didnt like the demo. The controls were all junk. I change my controls around and for the most part didnt work lol. I forgot there are so many buttons for the game lol i was getting confused. Also the map they gave to play wasnt all that great. Is the retail any better?

Depends what means better for you
The performance improved but that is old news. The retail island is the demo island with a part attached in the north which has the size of the demo island (twice the demo island size). The nothern part looks much better (more European look).
The controls are what they are you can fix them with reducing the floating stuff but if you could live with them earlier (-->OFP) then you will definatly can live with them now.

I have a friendly request for the co-op group right now hehe
Some of you might have seen the article i wrote on tactical movement on my website. I put 2 video's beneath it, wich show off some tactical entry manouevres, and some overlapping covering-arcs (bounding overwatch) and some formations in ArmA, but a lot of other things i could not include in those video's and instead of that i made pictures explaining how those techniques work.
Now i'd like to put those examples to practice as well, to further improve the article and for use as an 'instruction video'.
For that, i'd like your help.
I would love it if some of you guys could give me a hand before or after a co-op session to help me get the footage i need.
Anyone who would like to help is appreciated, and i'd like you to give me a sign if you want to help. You could do that by either a PM or let me know through the forums on my site, whatever suits you best (http://www.freewebs.com/tacticalgamingrefuge/tgrforums.htm)
That way, when i know how many people want to help, i can make up a small plan of wich techniques to use and show. Ofcourse your name will be mentioned in the video in a thank-you

I have very little technological knowledge so unfortunately i cant help you with that Silky...

How well will a ATI 3870hd, with 1.5 gb of ram, and a AMD 64 athalon x2 3800+, run arma? With my old x1300 i got around 20 fps with low everything and a high view distance.
I just ordered one with a cheapish 550 watt power supply.

Probably quite well. I'd suggest thinking about changing CPU though
hmmm, seems like the only one i can afford right now, would be a small upgrade to a x2 4200+
