So yesterday was a pretty good day for me.
The Doors have always been my absolute favorite band - even above Type O Negative - and last night Ray Manzarek was in town. I wanted to go, but I couldn't justify spending $80.00 for tickets for me and my wife. Well, I won tickets to see last night's show.
Then, a little later on in the day I got an email. See, I took the test to be a contestant on Jeopardy a couple months back. Turns out that I passed the test, and they want me to come to LA next month to audition in person. And then it was quitting time at work, so I got to go home and get ready for the concert.
Went to pick up my wife at her office, and we drove to the theater. It's in an old part of the city, so the streets are fairly narrow and there's not much in the way of parking. The theater is a beautiful old art deco-style movie theater from the 1930's. I pulled up to the theatre .... and the first spot, the one right next to the door, was open. I got the absolute best possible parking spot.
The opening act was awful, I'll tell that right up front. Some local group called '3 Guys Playing The Blues.' They were absolutely awful. Partly they pissed me off by being '3 guys' when there were actually 6 guys in the band. Their sound guy couldn't get the levels right. The horns were shrill. The vocals were almost inaudible. Anyway, they sucked.
It made the contrast that much more amazing when Manzarek came out. The guy is amazing. He's just a god with a keyboard. He's touring now with a guy that plays the slide guitar, and they have a bassist and a drummer backing them up. They play blues, mostly original stuff. They played three sets. In the break between the first and second, the other guys took a break and Manzarek played an extended instrumental version of The Crystal Ship, which was just beautiful. Really, really beautiful. That's always been one of my favorite songs by The Doors, and it just gave me chills hearing it.
Second set break, Manzarek answered some questions about The Doors. Incidentally, the guy is hilariously, brutally sarcastic and has a very low tolerance for stupid questions from stupid people. For instance: "What was it like watching Jim write?" "Well, have you ever seen someone holding a pencil? It was a lot like that. Like watching someone else holding a pencil and moving it around on a piece of paper."
Encore was Riders on the Storm. Again, beautiful.
