I read that shortly after I posted the previous post and I would presume it's the same with any kind of paste, as even though I do have Arctic Cooling paste around instead of Arctic Silver based on googling I haven't found any difference between how to apply the two pastes, only difference is pretty much their respective performance, burn-in periods and so on.
On the other hand it seems like vertical method is recommended for i7 CPUs.

Sounds like a better option to put a small blob in the middle instead.

As long as there is total coverage of the die, it doesn't matter how you get there. I've always used a blob & smear method. Simple, effective, and I've never had a cpu die on me... (out of a dozen or so machines)
Well the one thing that I have read universally is that too much results in higher temperatures. Looking at the one stripe method in the pics, the stripe they applied appears wider (more) than what was recommended for my cpu (1 mm wide). I know I used a bit less
well i used to re-sit a few amd athlon chips like that which i appreciate may be different now.
Athlons ran hot with a tiny die do a good job was important.
I would recommend the thin layer on the heatsink though to fill pits and ridges barely visible to the naked eye.
