Didn't notice it was halloween besides a halloween themed cloth at the bakery. Good! No reason to celebrate other people's holidays when it's purely made popular by commerce.

VALENTINE'S DAY IS COMMERCIAL BULL****!
*sits at home, crying because he's alone and always will be*
:p

The only things that really reminded me Halloween was coming was the Steam Halloween Sale, the news about the Killing Floor Halloween Sideshow event, and that everyone, including the monsters in Horde, had pumpkin heads in Gears of War 3.

I gotta say. Funny hats are cool and all, but in terms of special holiday events, TWI is easily in the lead with those ridiculous Killing Floor events.:)

I laugh at those crying how it's just commercialised+americanized bull****. It's certainly true but who gives a damn? Seeing almost anyone dressed up as a zombie/vampire/whatever is rather awesome if you'd ask me. But of course you can always stick to being a cynical, bitter and live-hating sociopath.

It's attitudes like this that destroy cultures.

Sic is correct, this is how a country's culture gets totally lost and its history forgotten.

Ugh, yes, everytime we see something we don't like or don't care for, lets blame us Americans

That is not how i meant it.
It was the principle of it. Whenever something goes multinational and everyone does it, part of the unique nature of each country becomes lost.
It's the same thing with Christmas here in Holland.
We had our own kind of Christmas called Sinterklaas, a Holy man who comes to Holland every year to spread good will and give presents to children, but different from Christmas and Santaclaus.
But each year more and more people forget about Sinterklaas it seems, and Santaclaus is taking over.
Something typically Dutch will be forgotten, and something that's international has taken over. Once more and more stuff like this goes and gets replaced, every country will look more and more the same.

Sic said what I wanted to say, really, however, American stuff and America's way is typically the "loudest" here, and it's one of the best examples.

With the technological age we're in and with how fast it's evolving, did you really expect this not to happen?

You go on and enjoy your culture then, I'll enjoy getting laid with vampire nurses.

Ah, simple minds.

And it's nothing to do with expecting or not expecting it to happen, it's still a damn shame and not something that should be encouraged.
The best part of traveling is to see something new and unique, something that you couldnt find anywhere else.
Variety and new experiences are what makes life worth living. If you take that away and every place becomes the same, i might as well die for i have seen all there is to see in this world.

It is something i feel heavily about, and it's the same thing with getting a steady job for me.
I'm just out of college, i should be taking on the world. Instead, people expect me to take up a job, and that should be the rest of my life. That, and the occasional holliday.
The fact is, the idea of it depresses me more than anything.
To settle down like that feels like i'm setting the rest of my life in stone, and that from now on basically every day will be the same.
Wake up, go to work, go home, watch tv/play videogames, repeat.
Life is now finally opening up to me, and i have to put it on autopilot?
**** no. But if every place ends up the same, what use is there in going out into the world to explore, to leave and take a break from everyday mundane life?

Way to over-exaggerate things. I'm not simple-minded either, you'll just have to put up with the fact that thinking so much about certain things isn't going to get you anywhere because you won't be changing anything anyhow. Of course it doesn't hurt to have a sophisticated opinion on things like this. Like I said this trend is definitely real and in the end it's all just commercialized crap but instead of philosophizing about it for weeks/shedding tears on the internet I'd rather take a look at how things are, accept that things are like that(not meaning liking or disliking it) and use the situation to your own advantage. Even if I don't like a situation(that I won't be able to change), I'd still rather use it to my own advantage than just ***** about it somewhere. My first reply was seemingly simple-minded because in that shortness you can see how I don't give a damn about this. Of course every person has different values and different some values are worth more for some than for others. I do very well have values and basically I do agree with you that the disappearance of indiviual cultures is worrying, but like I said before - I'd rather make the best of it while still keeping my personal opinion of the stuff.

Sure christmas has become very commercialized and focus from being together with your family shifted more towards buying expensive stuff. That's probably rather negative in most forum members views, myself included, yet I'm not going to skip the chance to buy stuff/receive stuff gifted that I like/want/need.

As for valentines day, I don't really see how that's commercialized, but even if it was, what's so bad about dedicating one whole day just for each other in a relationship?

And as for halloween - in my opinion it's cool to see so many people in costumes at once - and if by chance you might get a good chance to score that night because everybody is getting drunk - why would anyone skip that chance?

What I want to say with all this is simple: don't make the wrong assumption that simply living your damn life equals being simple-minded. You don't have to give up your values to enjoy things, things that definitely should be enjoyed in what in retrospect will have probably been your best years. It's just a matter of social intelligence. Sometimes you need to push all your principles aside a bit and just do things. Otherwise chances are you'll end up as a bitter individual on a gaming forum, making cynical remarks about everything. No offense. (not directed at you personally, just generally speaking)

Halloween predates Jamestown so I don't see how it's Americanization run rampant.... it's Anglicization run rampant.

Yeah, actually ... the traditions and practices around Halloween were practiced through much of the ancient world long before the tribe known as the Anglii were first noticed to exist by the Romans. They were slightly more ... malignant, too.
