I am one of those ignorant Europeans who never even knew that there was a Metal Gear before Metal Gear Solid on the playstation. And somehow, while everyone was totally freaking out I did not care for it at all. I remember reading about how Chris Roberts thought it was the **** and that it was ten times better than Half Life and showed that consoles are more innovative than PCs now (that was 1998). Just showed to me that this guy had no idea what he was talking about.

I had Metal Gear on my NES and I remember crying myself to sleep every night because I never came even close to complete it. It still is the hardest game I have ever played, and thank to this I now know that it truly was some hard **** right there!

Brought some memories. I remember thinking when is the checkpoint, when do I get inside and when do I get to see that wicked robot that was on the game's cover. I managed to sneak in, but died right after that, ditched the game and never looked back.

I have to say, watching avgn makes me feel sorry for the US gamer from mid 80s - 90s.
With the exception of a few classic nes games from japan, everything looks fairly crappy - and i'm not just talking about the avgn perspective here.
I mean - how many side scrollers did you guys have to endure?
I picked up a job lot of 70 carts for my snes last year and nearlly every one was a side scrolling beater/shooter. They were so unimaginative and I got rid of almost all of them.

Consoles weren't so big in my country at that time ppl got them for mario/sonic/streetfighter and little else.
- it was all about computers (zx spectrum cmb 64 though to atari ST amiga) and we had a massive variety of game types and many strategy/adventure games. Many still hold up today and there were so many genre defining titles too.

Apart from the handfull of well known classics, and taking off the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia for a minute - were there actually many truely great games for nes/snes/genesis?

Aye dogbadger, us Yurps where more about the early computers and not so much about the consoles (this is still true, PC gamers far outweigh Console gamers here even in todays market), and i'd definately say we got more variety for it.

I did own a Nes and a whole heap of games for it, since i got it for free, a freind of the family was very into that stuff, and when she got her Snes, she nolonger wanted her Nes (she was quite the techophile, only the latest and greatest was good enough!), so i got it and about 30 games for it too (and a zapper and GameGenie), and yeah.. there where like 5 of them i really played, the rest where quite rubbish, i don't even remember what half of them where called.

And it didn't get much play compared to how much i would play on my C64 and my 386.

Never was a console kid myself, i only played those over at my friends house : nes, snes and sega megadrive aka genesis. and of course the game gear, which i thought was pretty awesome. While it's true that 90 per cent of the games were sidescrollers, some were really great and very diverse: e.g. Shinobi was very different from sonic or super mario.

consoles were always about those 10 titles that rocked, the rest was usually garbage. but then, i couldn't give you ten really good pc games for last year either.

There might just be a connection there, just naming 10 recent games that where PC exclusives is going to be tough! it's allmost all multi-platform thease days, EI it's all treated as if it was the same market.

But alas, that's going a bit off topic.. the nerd needs to release something more often damnit :(

Aye, the zany acting segments are rather.. best word that describes it is "childish" really, i just ignore them, the funny comes from his raging over the games, not the bad acting.
