So as I play I get this from time to time, and it only goes away after a map change or reconnecting to server:

Not only is this very irritating to the eye as it flickers back to normal and this as I move, but it only seems to affect ground textures so I can see players through walls.

My system specifications

Operating system:
Windows 2.6.0.6002 (Service Pack 2)
CPU Type:
Pentium

that's really odd. i can't help wodering if it's memory related. i would think the game would run fine on that system. the memory seems to be the only weak link.

I might be onto something:

After the latest update (10th January) I renamed my current "config" folder to "config_", so the game would rebuild the config files (I had to test something). Right after I did that and selected the same settings as I had before, I got the black textures on every map I play.
Now, the interesting thing is, if I switch back to the old config folder by renaming, the black textures are fixed and I have the normal textures again on every map I play.

I validated my game cache files to rule them out as a source of the problem, they are fine.

So, I have two config folders on my pc, the old one which works just fine, and the new one with which I always get the black textures. Maybe if I upload both of them for TWI they could check the .inis for differences and narrow that error down.

I'm currently using Catalyst 11.10 WHQL, maybe I'll update them later today to the latest WHQL version to see if it fixes the issue if I have time for it.

edit:
this is what it looks like for me, might be a different problem after all

edit2:
updating driver to 11.12 WHQL didn't fix it.

edit3:
Found it,
this was the problem:
[ROGame.ROGameEngine]
bUseTextureStreaming=False
setting to "True" fixed the issue for my, but i think my issue was different than yours.

Nice work :)

Turning off texture streaming would do that, but I don't get how it would turn off by itself.

It didn't.

Some time ago I found the start parameter "NOTEXTURESTREAMING: Disable texture streaming. Highest quality textures are always loaded." at the UDN and put it in the RO2 launch parameters in steam.

BUT somehow it only got enabled after I deleted my config folder today and the .inis got recreated, so I thought it was working all the time when in reality it wasn't even enabled and I forgot I put it there.

After some comparison between my old ROEngine.ini (backed up the folder) and the new one I found it.

So, this is not some new bug, just my own fault.

Out of curiousity: Why didn't it just display the highest quality textures like it says in the UDN and used a huge load amount of memory, but displays black textures instead?

In short, that is because of the UE3 cooking process and our content pipeline. That makes the "notexturestreaming" option incompatible with RO2. If you are still curious, feel free to PM me.

I never changed anything manually in the config file, and I have this issue as well from time to time.

I only have 4GB memory, but the game runs pretty smooth all the time so I don't think that's it...

My windows 7 Professional 64bit takes 1,5 GB right now with Firefox and Steam open and I've seen RO2 take up to 2,8 GB, so it could get a little tight with 4 GB RAM. Vista is a little worse with RAM usage.

But Windows should use the pagefile if your RAM gets too full.
You didn't disable the pagefile for "performance reasons", did you?

not for nothing, but everyone who even thinks about posting questions in the support forum, should do as freezy has done. post your computer specs in the "signature" line! i'm gonna add mine to it now! you're gonna get asked anyway.

Just a quick follow-up on this: I flashed my bios and since then I didn't have this bug anymore.

Might be helpful for others with the same problem. :) Still weird that textures can disappear like that, felt like an annoying version of wallhack at times.;)
