OP here.

This is a 64 bit DirectX Diagnostic taken right before I launched the game and took the following screen shots.

Attached is a pic on Red October as well, with everything maxed out except shadows (medium) at 1920x1080.

On my 50' TV, RO 2 looks very impressive :D

The reason I post this is to show Nner that gamma plays an important role...

No no, you got it all wrong.

2011 Graphics:

*pfft* Really??

Wow, I can make things ultra contrasty so that I have the vision equivalent of someone who stared too long at a nuclear explosion.... I can bloom the living b'Jebus out of everything so that I constantly feel like I'm about to be abducted......

Really??

RO2 Stuff

2011 Graphics:
BF3 stuff.

Now, while I'm not going to go so far as Praxius in terms of eloquent soliloquy and colorful language, I do agree with what he is saying. There is a reason that BF3 (as well as CoD, Assassin's Creed, and most modern games) run better on PCs than RO2.

Its because they are not PC games. They are console games ported to PC. And consoles are well known to have last-gen rendering hardware. Thus a game designed for older hardware will naturally play better on older machines. The graphical "quality" that is attained is done primarily via three tricks. Normal-mapping, bloom, and saturation.

Normal mapping is the idea of creating an ultra high-poly model, rendering it, taking what is essentially a screenshot, and pasting it onto a low-poly model. When you're playing the game, you won't tell the difference until you smash your face into the other player for example.

Bloom is that washed-out look you get on these games. It helps blend textures together at the edges so you do not see a break between models, textures, etc. And can also help with DoF effects.

Lastly, saturating the colors all to hell gives you that vibrant look that we associate with modern games. The "staring at a nuclear explosion" that Praxius mentioned.

None of these things actually make the graphics "better", we are just told they do. Poly-counts and texture resolution actually favor RO2, it just does not look like these other games because it isn't supposed to.

But back to the business at hand, I'm not going to tell you to go get a new computer. I know how much being stuck with an old machine sucks, trust me I do, especially when you can't do anything about it. It took me almost a year of work at an Aluminum plant to upgrade my own setup last month. This is while working on an MS in Engineering.

But I will tell you to listen to some of the guys here when they say to keep playing around with your settings. I ran RO2 in January on my old rig. No, I did not run it maxed out, or anything like it, but I managed some playable FPS. Not "playable" as the elitists define it these days (60+), but in the traditional sense, around 25-35, and it was glorious.

For starters, definitely check the box for One Frame Thread Lag. There is a post about it from one of the Devs somewhere in these forums. Search for it if you like.

As posted before, this game is very CPU intensive, not so much GPU. So with your rig, if you have anything running in the background that is not absolutely necessary and may be taking up uneccessary CPU cycles be sure to close it prior to playing.

On second thought, I'd try this first.....
As installs and patches often get fubared, you might try a really quick and simple thing...
try deleting your C:\Users\yourusername\Documents\My Games\RedOrchestra2\ROGame\Config folder. When the game starts it will regenerate that folder and the files in it. The only caveat is that you'll lose any key rebinds that you may have made. And as an uninstall/reinstall of the game does not touch that folder, its necessary to delete it manually prior to a reinstall otherwise old settings, ini's, etc. will still be there. Its a simple check to be sure that something wasn't leftover from a patch or fubared on an install.

Good luck.

Let's see, so you think BF3's
-Oversaturation
-Contrast limiting
-Extreme sunglare
-FXAA Blur
-Lots of unneeded smoke particles

Really is that much prettier than RO2? I mean, come on, RO2 went for the "I'm not going to go berzerk with the shader effects" approach like BF3.

Though I will admit that in BF3, the dark spots on the map, truly are dark. In RO2 you kind of still glow in the dark.

i get rather average frames in RO2, but personally dont really think the visuals are all that appealing aesthetically; especially the ground textures. The snow looks like concrete.

While graphics arent everything, i do wonder why i get lower frames in RO2 than i do with BF3, Crysis, Crysis 2, Metro2033

Lol BF3 looks gorgeous, idk what you're on about. I agree that DICE has gone a bit apes*** with the bloom (i live near a desert, and i've never experienced sun glares like that), but overall BF3 is one of the nicest looking games to have come out in a while.

Gameplay opinions not withstanding

I ordered an AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Deneb 3.7GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor and I'm going to overclock it at least 100Mhz so hopefully this will fix my issue.

Battlefield 3, honestly looks like crap.

It is an utter pain to the eyes, unless you prefer modding the FXAA shaders, disabling motion blur and extensive bloom. And then when you do remove those, the game suddenly doesn't look so special anymore.

Then there's the aesthetics, buildings are empty, several world items have rediculously low polygon counts, some of the maps don't have any decoration besides the geometry itself when looking at the outer edges(flight zones) of the map.

Please someone explain to me why it takes a $2000 computer to play a game that has graphics from 2004. I only have a 2.4Ghz dual core but it runs every other modern game that looks 10x better than RO2 flawlessly. I am lucky to get more then 10 frames per second.

Before anyone suggests, I have tried every config tweak available, and every NVidia profile and driver available, and I still don't get any more than 10 /frames per second with every setting off or on low in game settings and config. Not everyone has an extra $500 lying around to invest in a motherboard and processor just to play a game that barely looks better than the original Red Orchestra mod for UT.

Personal attacks, insults, flames, and trolls will be ignored, this is a legitimate question.

Dude, Im running it on a $1500 machine with EVERYTHING on max and I run it absolutely flawlessly with virtually no lag. Here's a hint if you want performance for a low cost: BUILD YOUR OWN!!! The benefits of doing so are irresistible.

Obviously the bloom is ridiculously overdone in BF3, but aside from that, it looks better than RO2. Especially considering the small maps RO2 has to offer. I'm not suggesting RO2 looks bad, it doesn't, but the visuals do not justify the performance. When I'm playing ARMA2 and it occassionally chokes, I accept it, because the map is huge, and there are tons of things happening on screen.

Also, isn't the U3 engine essentially a console game engine.

after seeing your specs your problems are as follows.

A 24" monitor 1920x1080 res.

a athlon x2 4600 dual core. Just so we are clear here, your cpu is from april of 2005.

a Nvidia 260, old but not the worst of your problems. ( just for clarification here Nvidia does the steps of each generation to be -10 of the old gen. so the 480 will be ~= a 570 which will be ~= a 660. This means your 260 is somewhere around a 630 or in other words a bottom of the line budget card )

and 4 gigs of ddr 2 ram.

You are trying to output to a large monitor from a system that doesnt have the cahonies. Either lower your 3d resolution a LOT or upgrade.

As others have stated, the other games you are referencing are all designed for consoles which were built with hardware around when your computer was made; that is the only reason they work on your current machine.

If you want a budget build consider getting:
AMD phenom x4 quad core ( something around a 965 ).
AMD 6850
8 gigs ddr3 memory, go for 1333mhz stuff its dirt cheap.
AM3/3+ mobo.

or if you want to drop a bit more coin go for:
i5 2500K
AMD 6870 / 560TI
16 Gigs ddr3

I am not doubting that BF 3 looks impressive. However, When I am looking outside right now and then on the BF 3 screenshot in this thread, I think sth is wrong. BF 3 somehow looks like I am on magic mushrooms...

The atmosphere that almost all maps of RO 2 are creating (except Barracks and Gumrag) is awesome.
