First off, I didn't post this in the "Support" forum since it isn't RO and has nothing to do with RO.

I got Return to Castle Wolfenstein last night while I was going on a totally random buying spree on Steam. Whenever I try to start the game, though, the console comes up and says:

Updating/reinstalling your driver might help.

(I know, its the standard answer for every question asked on the intarnets. Even if you just want to know where you solitair.exe is, but it looks like something is wrong with your openGL and if it isn't the game's fault, it might be your driver's).

Excellent! I am a tad computer illiterate though, so if you could explain how to update my drivers, I'd appreciate that.

I don't know your graphics card and I can't see it in the log (of course not, as the game didn't recognize it. That's your problem, I guess).
You have to tell us what card you have and then we will help you find and install a driver.:)

I followed the instructions on nvidia's website, which led me to download drivers for my video card from HP's website. Console still crashes while booting up the game with the same error.

What do I do now?

Do you have windows?

Go to settings -> software -> select NVidia Display Driver and uninstall it. Don't reboot yet.
Download DriverCleaner, install and run it, select "Nvidia" and click on "clean". Reboot.

If you can't select all your resolutions in your display settings, everything went alright. Your gfx card driver should now be gone. You can also try to start RO and if it doesn't work, that's a good sign too.

Tell Windows to shut the hell up when it wants to install drivers.
Run the .exe you downloaded from NVidia. The install path you have to set is only temporary. It just puts its files there before it really installs them to your windows directory. Just leave it as it is and it should be fine.
If it tells you it didn't have a signature for the driver, tell it its ok. You don't need one.
Then reboot.
Try RO again. If it works, the driver should be installed.

Now try RTCW again. If it works, fine, if it doesn't work, the problem has to be something else.
For example you might need to revert back to an older driver, or you might have to reinstall the game and/or update it.

Nvidia 7600 you say?

I've got one of those. Probably worst buy i ever made, they screw up on almost everything and 90% of the time the new drivers don't fix the problem.

There is a 3rd party driver though which fixes a bundle of problems and its the driver i've got installed now. It fixed problems on ArmA, Guild Wars and a few others.

I'll edit the post once i find it again

EDIT:

i *think* its this http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=15&go=giveme&dwn_id=522 but im not completely sure. Only use it if Murphy's advice doesn't work.. Oh and don't worry, even if you do install it and it's not the one (which im pretty sure it is) you can just roll-back your driver to the one before :D

Oh God, I'm going to look like such a n00b..

Murphy, when you says "settings", where do you mean? I can't find anything with that title. Do you mean Control Panel -> Display-> Settings? I tried that and can't find any tabs or links into "software".

Thanks for helping me. I just don't know where else I would go for effective technical support (have you ever tried E-mailing a developer/publishers Customer Service dept.?).

I have a German Windows so everything has slightly different names and I often forget what they are called in English.:eek:

Murphy,
I was right. I got rid of the display drivers and followed the rest of your instructions. They worked perfectly and passed the RO test on both occasions, but I still have the same error when I try to boot up RTCW.

I'll look at Jono's post a little more closely in a little bit, but I've got work to do for the time being. Murphy, or anyone else for that matter, please feel free to post any other ideas you think might help. I appreciate the help you have given me.

Ok, it seems like your driver wasn't the problem.
Now on to the next possible solution:
Maybe it was the game's fault.
Is there a "safe mode" that you could start in? Some games, like UT2004, have a safe mode that is used after crashes. The game starts with default settings then.
In quake 3 some problems could be solved by deleting the q3config.cfg, where the game stores its settings. It would generate a new one with default settings if you restart the game and those worked sometimes (you would have to change the settings to your likings again afterwards. Like, your detail settings, your controls, etc.). I don't have RTCW anymore, so I can't look up how the cfg is called, but you should be able to find it. It ends in .cfg obviously and its not the autoexec.cfg. There shouldn't be too many around anymore then, so try one that sounds good.
Make a back-up of it before though!
Then restart the game and see if it works.

It doesn't have a safe mode, but I did delete the wolfconfig.cfg file. But, believe it or not, the console is now coming back with a NEW problem when I try to launch the game: recursive error after: ^3menu file not found: ui/ingame.txt, using default

Hmm. Looks like its missing a few files. Have you tried to let steam verify the game cache? Run steam, go to your games page, then right-click the Wolfenstein entry and let steam verify your gamecache. It checks your files and if something is missing or broken it should redownload it.

I did that yesterday, because that's the first thing that came to mind. I came up with nothing.

But I just did it again, and now Steam is updating the game. I guess I'm going to wait and see.

...Or not. Now the game freezes when the first mission tries to load. Back to the Activision support page. If I need your help, I'll let you know.
