I'd prefer to see driving dropped altogether and the tank commander given control of the vehicle via 'voice commands' - forward, reverse, left and right. Put in a basic AI to handle the actual driving as per Steel Beasts, this frees up players to act in the more interesting roles of gunner and commander. See http://www.redorchestragame.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4316&postcount=40

AFAIK all German tanks were petrol-engined. British tanks were a mix of petrol and diesel, I think mostly early tanks petrol and late tanks diesel but am open to correction. Most US tanks were petrol except for I think one USMC variant of the M4 Sherman. Most USSR light tanks were petrol, but the T-34, KV and IS series were all diesel.

Sounds good, but I find driver much more interesting than a commander of gunner.

And I think a lot of others prefer driving over shooting too.
Nontheless, the plan is good, maybe the radio-op could be a bot???

Btw you posted something about tank crews in the tank gear threads and vice versa :p...

Though I wouldn't mind seeing an "AI" driver as an option, I'll trust my teammates more to drive, at least in organized BFE play.

I found some interesting info on how steep of grades these tanks could actually manage climb.

Unfortunately, I could only find info on German tanks. If anyone can post the Max Grade given for Soviet tanks of the era, it would be great.

PanzerIV/Panther 58% = 30 degrees
Tiger I = 78% = 37 degrees

Here's the site: http://afvdb.50megs.com/germany/pz470.html

Would you guys say this is modeled about right in RO? I would guess some of those Kalinin slopes are greater than 30 degrees.

My mouth is watering to see what you guys have done with the new engine.

I'm curious how many of these suggestions will be moot points once ROOST comes out.

Maybe this forum should be retitled Ideas/Hopes until the game comes out...

Are the figures the same for every sufrace? For wheels they are not but for tracks, maybe...

Tracks distribute the weight of the tank much mor than wheels. Think about the surface area of a track. That's what allows such a heavy vehicle to not immediately sink/get stuck when not on pavement.

I think the max grade assumes that the terrain is sufficiently strong to hold the tank, and only refers to the ability of the drive system to lift/move the tank. So in otherwords, weather the incline is paved or dirt, as long as it doesn't give way, the tank should be able to take it as long as it's not more than 30 degrees (Panther and Pzr IV). This would of course have to be done at the lowest gear.

All I know is the Churchill could easily beat any of those tanks in this regard, it was famous for its climbing ability. A rather fun tank, shame the Russians didn't get very many of them so there's no chance of an appearane in RO

Since a driver doesn't really do anything with primary or alt-fire, I'd like to see gear shifting controlled by those two buttons. Primary = up, Alt = down.

That way you can control everything without having to reach for new buttons.

Excellent suggestion.
