I figured since this was empty I may as well start off with some stuff on the non retail version. The experience players know all this so its for new players.

Always kill the enemy who is most likely to kill you first. For experienced players this is a no brainer. For new players its not so easy as they assume whatever is closest is going to kill them first.

An example is if you have some chainsaw guys coming towards you and some normal dead guys and a couple screaming girls. The chainsaw guys are the hardest to kill and do the most damage but they're slow which makes them easier to just walk away from. The normal dead guys approach steadily so they arrive first to attack you. The girls on the other hand kinda hang back out of the way. They have a range attack which allows them to stand behind the other dead ppl and scream you to death. Even though they're the ones who are furthest from you, they can deliver the first attack and if they're shielded by the other dead ppl then you can't easily kill them to stop their attack.

The crawlers are the ones who kill me and many experienced players the most in early game. If you don't have vest (armour) when they start attacking you then they can kill you very quickly. Once they're on you, trying to shoot them off you with a shotgun or hunting doesn't work so well as you'll miss most of your shots, it can be frustrating. The best weapons against them when they're on you is dualies (two handguns) or bullop.

The best method though is to kill them at far range with a winchester so they never get close enough to attack.

Near the end of the round when you've killed almost all the dead people, it can be good to leave 1 alive to follow you back to the shop, that way you can kill it outside the shop door and get extra time to refit your weapons. In some maps the shop can be quite far from where you're battling so it becomes more important to keep one alive.

When flesh pounds come (the big guys with the yellow light on their chest that turns red), don't shoot at them unless you have a plan to finish and kill them. They walk at a decent pace, but once you upset them, their chest light turns red and they start to charge and will kill most people in 1 hit (2 if you have armour and luck). The formula to kill a flesh pound is basically 2 hits with a power weapon (or the equivalent damage). 2 grenades, 2 law rockets, 1 grenade + 1 law rocket, 1 law rocket + 1 hunting rifle shot work. You can also shoot them with smaller weapons but it takes a lot longer to kill them and unless you're good at getting away, they'll rush and kill you before you kill them.

If you have a group of 3-5 flesh pounds coming at you together then it becomes tricky because the odds of killing all of them together is very low. In that situation the best bet is to run and try to single one or two out and kill them together or get enough distance between you and them that you can attack the whole group and run away for long enough that they calm down and stop raging. Most maps have pickups and if the map is big enough then you can keep running and finding more ammo/weapons to continue the battle.

These next ones aren't really strategy but more of manners:

In some shops there is limited space so very few people can get in to buy. If you're playing with many people and you're on a map with such a shop, try to get in, buy/reammo and get out quickly so the next person can get a turn. Sometimes people are inconsiderate which leaves part of the team with low or no ammo for the next round which can be death for everyone.

If you don't have any ammo but have an empty hand gun then ask someone if you can borrow their dualie for a moment to reload. When you get the dualie, throw it on the ground once and pick it up again to re-ammo your hand gun then throw the dualie back to the other player. If you have extra weapons and someone doesn't have any then you can throw a weapon at them and if they have room in their inventory for it then they'll auto receive it, else it lands on the ground and you can pick it up again.

If you're new to playing, try not to weld doors inside the buildings/houses that join areas where players are battling, especially if these playing areas are small. The worst thing is when you're in a fight and start backing up to go thru the doorway you just came thru and find that a new player has closed and welded it and left you on the other side for dead. It's safe to weld outside doors which lead to zombie spawn points, just don't weld the inside ones which block off people's safety routes and never weld players out and block their only escape route.

Another thing is don't steal other player's weapons, it can ruin their game. To know if a weapon is someone's or not is easy. If they're standing, crouching or jumping on top of a weapon it means it is theirs, even if they don't seem to be able to pick it up. If they decide they don't want it then they'll leave it and walk away (This doesn't always apply inside the shop though, thats different)

During shop time you'll see people throwing their weapons on the ground in the shop, usually in a corner or to the side. This does not mean they're opening up a free weapon shop for you to come take all their weapons, it means they're reorganizing their inventory and putting their weapons on the ground to do so. If you accidentally pick up someone else's weapon just throw it back . If someone tells you that you took their weapon then give it back.

Very nice Jaek! You managed put into words what goes on inside one's(at least my) head, that you never really reflect upon. Thumbs up!

Thank you Jaek for the tips, I'm new to the game and this will help me avoid accidentally pissing off experienced players.

The idea of welding out other players tickled my mind though, just imagine getting some asshole on your team who doesnt know how to behave.
Just run away from him and weld him out, and listen from the other side of the door as he gets overrun:D

Very good advice! I will add my own (repost from steam forums, so there will be overlaps):

1) plan what you will buy in the shop before entering - time between waves is short and you don't want to be caught a) with stuff but all alone in front of the shop or b) kicked out of the shop with a full wallet because you couldn't make up your mind in time

2) in early waves, look around the map (perhaps after the end of the wave and on the way to the shop) and pick up weapons that have spawned, if you're full then alert your teammates where they are, so you all have something to sell in the shop.

3) when shopping - first sell what you don't need, then fill up on ammo for what you carry, and only then buy new stuff - shiny guns ain't worth a lot if they got no ammo.

4) if the waves are early (1-5), team is playing good and weapon spawns are plenty, consider organizing that one or two players sell all their belongings and make more money by picking up more stuff and selling it again. They will buy stuff for you if you screw up and die, the only thing that can't be passed around in the mod are grenades and armor - you'll have to scrounge up for that by yourself.

5) if there is a door that absolutely must stay welded shut, and you have to dedicate one or two teammates for welding, rotate with them - they will not get bored and quit, and they will also get a chance to earn money by killing the zombies/specimens. In later waves you will all need to be armed to the teeth, and the more expensive weapons also have quite expensive ammo

6) when I say ammo - it's scarce. Shoot with minimum force needed to take something down. Example - don't waste rockets or hunting shotgun on weak specimens (unless necessary), you won't have enough ammo when you need it (or money to buy it) later. More advanced players: If a specimen is downed with 1 shotgun blast or 2 winchester shots, 1 sgun ammo = 5$ and 2 winchester ammo = 6$, choose the more effective option (shotgun). Carry both a winchester and a shotgun and use each only on the specimen it's best against.

7) make a plan for retreating. When the heavyweights come - you won't be able to hold position no matter what you try. Find the longest route where specimens won't cross your path and put half of the team on one end and half on the other - communicate and shift players on each end as required.

8) heal teammates and self when you can - if you loose one player - you can maybe make it, if you loose more than that - you're most probably dead as well.
smile.gif

9) if a teammate runs out of ammo and you have 2 guns, throw one to your teammate - even if you don't get it back you can't shoot two at the same time

10) reload, reload, reload.
smile.gif
Reload any time there is any lull in the fighting, reload the most useful weapon first, not the one you are handling at the time. If you have a good line of sight (you see them coming from a long way away) and you don't have time to reload everything, reload just enough bullets for each gun you have to efficiently take out what is approaching, then if you have time left reload to full capacity.

11) focus fire on the most dangerous threats, but try and take out the targets that are not being shot at by your teammates. This is to stop wasting ammo - if you both shoot at the same target and one shot is enough, one of you just wasted a bullet - and will pay for it later.
smile.gif

12) if trying to hold a last stand (you can't choose targets because monsters are in your face and you don't have anywhere to retreat to) - stagger your shots. That means, if there is three of you holding a corridor - don't all shoot at the same time, shoot with a second of pause between each of you. This way you will not shoot 3 times into the same monster, and will have a much greater chance of surviving. Agree upon a shooting order (who goes 1st, 2nd and 3rd) and stick with it!

13) grenades - use them wisely. If team damage is on, be careful not to kill yourself and everyone else on your team - grenades will bounce of your teammates backs and land right back at your feet, screaming specimens can detonate grenades while they're in the air. But do use them - take out the small fries with grenades so you can focus fire on the big kahunas. If the specimens are stuck in front of a (welded) door, do throw in a grenade, but not too many at the same time or you can demolish the door as well, and that will not end good.
smile.gif

14) diversify armaments in the team according to the map you're playing on and the composition of specimens in the incoming wave. Always have someone long ranging weapons for the screaming specimens. You can keep them from screaming by shooting them. You can keep even two from screaming by shooting alternately at one and the other. Make a closeup sub-team with shotguns and a ranged sub-team with winchesters or crossbows. Later switch to hunting shotguns and rocket launchers.

... and I think I will finish with that, that is most of the important stuff that I can think of now.

I found playing as bait has helped tremendously when we're being overrun.

We've got multiple guys coming at us in Bio Lab in a T intersection.

So I run through the enemy wave and start getting guys to chase me eventually ending right where I started but coming in from a different door.

So I weld the door shut behind me and I've now cut the enemy numbers in half as well as leading a number of Chainsaw guys (The most important part of the strategy) away until we can deal with them.

Bad part about this strategy is the next time I tried this I got trapped and chainsawed to death.

I'm new as well but wanted to add

  • The number of zombies in a wave are displayed in the top-right
  • When there are less than 5 or 10 zombies, don't shoot the weak ones and tell everyone to head to the store.
  • This way you can avoid wasting time walking to the trader.
  • Finish off the remaining zombies to open the store
