One of my biggest annoyances with this otherwise good game is this particular feature. I don't think it'd hurt to give us an option on if we want to suicide following a particular change, just like TF2 does for example.

It's very annoying rushing to change your class to the open one you wanted precisely because you know that if you don't do it before you spawn, you'll suicide, which happens regardless because you were apparently too slow. I think the majority of us don't mind living out our last life as an engineer and then being a rifleman like we wanted when we respawn ;).

Noooo they should make it even more awful. As it is now, it kills you, puts you back in the respawn queue, costs you -2 team points and costs the team another reinforcement ticket. It should be even more arbitrarily punishing, like, having the game broadcast a "your momma" joke about you to all players and set your character on fire upon spawning again which causes your team mates to be surpressed. Your character runs around with a troll face after the fire is put out and your teammates all get one chance to TK you without consequence.

I am a little disappointed that Tripwire did not take things to the limit in annoying game design.

It is especially strange that this happens here, since this was not a problem in RO1. Unless its a bug I don't see the reason why they would have changed it to make the player die. Why not just copy it from RO1?

ill probably get flamed for this, but they could learn something from CoD... if you select a different class while still alive, a message comes up saying "your class will be changed upon respawn" or something like that, suiciding just changing class is just stupid.. and not realistic lol.. the class change should be done after you die with the current class.

+1 op, totally agree!

+1 Op as well.
Sometimes it even seems like you can't spawn, so you go back to class selection screen, you select one, and boom, turned out you spawn meanwhile, so you die.

Yeah, like, even more smg and semi for noobs who can't aim for squat.
I would be delighted.

Or they could just learn from their own game - Red Orchestra:Ostfront 41-45 which also had this feature.

Well, I doubt this is how they wanted it to work. Maybe it was pushed down the list of priority fixes for the game release. Causing a suicide is the most fool proof way of getting things to work since it will cause you to respawn. Could have been an issue with getting the game to remember your preferred choice and respawn you upon natural death.

It doesn't make the game unplayable so if they had to make priorities, it was probably right to leave this feature to be polished at a less hectic time.

I guess you are right. Alongside a host of other "small" problems, like missing spanws on account of the lack of fixable spawnpoints, no chat in mapvote or after rounds, recon plane graphics getting stuck in the sky, reinforcements cut-off message in Grain Elevator etc, etc. I guess they have just let them be for the time being, while working on major problems like performance issues, stat problems etc.

But all these small things do add up unfortunately to an overall buggy experience, I and would think that it has done a lot to scare off less addicted players than me (I get annoyed a lot, but I still hang on, not least because playing Spartanovka using the bolt rifle, is for me just about the closest you get to how the whole game will eventually be and should have been from the start, a better updated version of RO1).

I'm guessing they wanted to fix the wait time if you spawned with the wrong class and wanted a switch, but didn't quite think it through?
There has to be some reason the system is as retarded as it is.

Couldn't agree more. When hearing a tank for instance, I'd want to switch swiftly to AT gunner to, you know, help my team.

But nope, I have to wait to be killed, running wild in the open like a rabbit with my "Shoot me" sign. +1 for the enemy team for the kill, cheers.

Or basically it could of course change right away my class. -2 for my team, cheers.

The best thing being the "AT gunner" refill bug: "Gosh ! I'm all out and I can't refill to ammo boxes ! What could I do ?. Oh, I know, let's scream "I'M ALL OUT" out loud with my pistol, and get killed as I'm as useless as a lice on a bald man's forehead versus Tank !"

yeah, this is frustrating.. when i played ro1, lots of times i'd get in a game and the only thing open was the rifle class. ive no problem using rifles, but, i enjoy spraying an smg. so, i was constantly checking to see what class opened up when people would leave or when i died. when a smg opened up, if i was still alive, i'd select it and type in suicide to immediately take the class. it never MADE me kill myself tho.. it was a hard lesson to learn in this game!

they need to fix the spawn select screen too! heh, when i die, i have to move the mouse around alot to see where my cursor is and hurry to select a spawn point before the counter restarts. usually i don't make it, so, i decide to switch spawn points. here is where it gets frustrating. open spawn select screen, try to select location, and the window closes.. wash rinse and repeat till you either respawn or the window stays open long enough to change locations (sometimes the window closes as soon as you open it!).. the voting screen at the end does the same type of thing. you scroll thru the maps to vote on and as soon as someone votes, it jumps up to the top of the list. constantly! you have to be real lucky to vote on something that's not showing on the top of the list! i can never look at all the maps to vote on..

oops, i vented about something else! sorry! it just seems that when the mouse cursor is involved on the screen, frustration is just around the corner! most of these things can be relieved with some forethought, tho. but, it would be nice if they'd fix it!

Hell they didn't need to learn squat from CoD. In ROOst, if you wanted to change class...you just did it, whenever. Up popped a message that stated 'You will attempt to respawn as assault' (or whatever). When you died, and your time to respawn came up...IF that role was available that's what you'd become. If it was NOT available, you'd respawn as what you already were.

Another example of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' But they fixed it anyway.

I retract my original post. This is a far more sound solution that I think we can all agree on; otherwise you're just trolling, aren't you?

I had suggested a more complex ready up system, but I'll take just about anything at this point if it keeps me from suiciding.

+1 I can see how autokill on role change could help development... it does NOT help full game play though. I have faith that this is on the list :D
