In no particular order, here's a list of things I think would really benefit RS2 and enhance its playability:

1. offline or COOP mode vs bots - similar to ARMA3. We now have the BEST authentic Vietnam FPS and I would love to be able to do SP or coop missions with mates eg.
- search & destroy
- patrol
- ambush
- base defense
adding bots (similar to Day of Infamy) would really enhance this
2. adding playable mortars. mortars played a big role in Vietnam (as in any war since WW2) providing indirect fire support. Having a specialist mortar team would be awesome (maybe requiring them to pinpoint on a map or do some sort of calc) with a cool down timer and limited ammo (unless based on/near an ammo dump)
3. adding PBRs (Patrol Boat River) so we can do mobile riverine type missions with the boats as direct fire support

I know PBR's have been confirmed to not be happening. I think there was a mod team who attempted it but I'm not sure if anything came of it.
I don't think we need player controlled mortars, RO/RS/RS2 don't have gameplay suited for it imo. It's tactical but not as much as Project Reality or Squad where you can build small outposts on the map.
I do think that the Mortar Strike commander ability should be given to all of the factions though. It could have a smaller cool down time than arty but not last as long or have as big of a radius.

I like mortars idea. I don't know re: historic accuracy, but imagine fixed mortar emplacements with variable compass (directional 360°) and elevation angle (deciding distance). Have cooldown persist between players swapping onto and off it, so it cant be exploited, that'll be fun!
