a few notes:
-Grain elevator- A map that's supposed to be biased against the German side. I've always found difficulty attacking this area. I take the far left flank.
...So I've been playing as a Russian DP gunner just to find out why:
1. Tower: Running to the tower first thing, and setting up a DP can win you a nice killstreak before the Germans realize that the tower is shooting down on them. Then they try to pin down the tower, but this is easily mitigated by firing a mosin judiciously. The DP is tough, but not impossible, to set up once the Germans have a bead on the tower.
-note. Shorter 3-7 round bursts with the DP against moving targets at 150 meters is not effective enough, longer, sometimes up to 12 round bursts are needed. stationary targets can be dispatched with a 3-5 round burst.
-note. Forgot to adjust the sight on the DP (default is 50meters).
2. Grain elevator, 4th, 5th, etc. floors. Pretty much this explains why the Germans get massacred in the courtyard and construction site. I scored two kill streaks -10 and roughly another 10 or 11 in a row just firing a DP through a window for the first time.
The entire avenue of approach is exposed- the top of the contruction site and the entire courtyard is open to get shot at, and it's hell for the Germans. There's so little real cover. Most germans mistakenly believe that they are under cover but they're actually not, because from the high vantage point denies them most of it all.
Conclusion: My experience in this game has convinced me, thus far, to play as the Soviets whenever I encounter this map. The Germans are only clear if they mass their attack on the left. The Courtyard and the construction site is a shooting gallery for the Russians.

Update:
My kill ratio is now 2.9 to 1, and I am usually ranked in the middle or above-average in terms of points. On rare occasion, I am on top. I play only large games, with 55+ human players.
I continue to prefer squad leader and if unavailable, then the rifleman. Essentially, I look for the smoke, squad leader, and the semi-auto. I find that the trio increase my life expectancy, attack power, and points over other alternatives.
The G41 has supplanted the K98 as my most used weapon in the attack and the defense. The accuracy rate with all my rifles hovers around 35-40%.
I have not learned to respect the submachinegun in open space yet. I prefer to assault the objective carefully with smoke and I leapfrog from cover to cover towards the objective. I keep a lookout for good defensive positions in case I finally make contact with the enemy.
I make sure that I am an 'extension' of the main axis of attack, so I'm not a lone figure and I don't present the sole target for enemies that are waiting to ambush us.
In an ideal situation:
Once I make contact, I halt, and hold a defensive position while respawns appear around me, and increase our defensive power. I find that throwing smoke, and announcing it, rallies other players towards My objective..
Then we thin them out. Eventually, they stop moving towards my sector, and then I move up with the rest of the troops. Rinse, repeat. It may not be the most aggressive tactic, but it works fairly well for a risk-adverse player like me. The ideal situation is to catch the enemy capzone reinforcements moving on their flank and then drop them accordingly. So mine is a steady, methodical way of attacking.
For this reason, I prefer not to be in a situation where I need to get close enough to use grenades. Often, my best games are ones where I throw zero grenades. So I am still hesitant of overextending out of the main axis of attack, and getting within point-blank range. I am not pointman unless I'm confident as to what lies in front of me.
I am still curious as to how the top players do it, though. And if they do anything much differently.
