Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad is an accurate representation of life in Stalingrad in 1942.

What more can I say? If you want 'stopping power' use the anti-tank rifle.

Personally I have found hitting people in the upper chest, neck and head with any of the rifles has sufficient stopping power and often incapacitates them before I have even finished bolting my weapon.

It's realistic to be able to keep running after being shot in the belly, by the way.

Panzer Jager '43, your information makes sense, huge one. But I wish you (eh, I don't mean you, Panzer Jager '43 :) ) can feel stopping power at least sometimes.

They have bigger caliber :IS2:

They may have wider caliber, but they weigh less (on average) and fly at reduced velocities... also, the difference in caliber is really insignificant.

Let's take the area of a circle in this case.

9mm = 0.355 In, area = ~0.099
7.92x57mm = 0.323 In, area = ~0.082
7.62x54mmR = 0.31 In, area = ~0.075

The area of a 9mm round compared to the 7.62x54mmR is only 30% larger.
The energy of the 7.62x54mmR round is ~7.5-8x larger.

The Rifle cartridges will also yaw in tissue and create a permanent cavity that is a factor of the length of the projectile as well...

On a randomly related note, I'll try to remember to post the article about duelers who were stabbed in the heart, and continued to fight. Interesting read, I just need to remember to track it down.

I'm not surprised. Even if your heart is completely annihilated you will not die for between 7-10 seconds. Of course, if you are incapacitated, you're as good as dead, but if you aren't, you can still fight for that long, even if it's sure death in the end.

In the heat of battle stopping power doesn't necessarily mean anything, often the adrenaline keeps you pumped and your training keeps you going. IIRC there's a clip on Youtube of a British soldier in Afghanistan who gets shot - he shouts in pain, but continues to get into his light vehicle and withdraws without too much drama.

UPDATE: Royal Marine Gets Shot While Wearing A Helmet Camera - YouTube

There's the vid - skip to 3:00 for bullet impact. He drives off, obviously in considerable pain - but when he realises he's been shot in the arse, he laughs about it - tough guy!

Alright, you persuaded me.

Offtopic: why there only 1 page, but after some time new post appears... before old posts, making it 2 pages :confused:

:)

It's to do with people who have less than 10 posts making contributions to a thread before their posts are anti-spam verified. At least that's what I think causes the extra page bug, sure I read that somewhere.

If you get shot in the heart and it explodes, you still have about 10 seconds of oxygen left in your brain to fuction...FYI

Ah... so that's why none of my posts are showing up. I guess this one won't, either.

Hmm, really don't know how "heart-shots" work in RO2.

Sadly ingame they are instantaneous death with any caliber weapon, which is not completely realistic as we have said ~10 seconds for your brain to function, but it's just a game and the instantaneous death factor is just to represent the fatality of being hit in the heart.

I has this reflexion about stopping power yesterday too.

When a soldier is running, especially when sprinting, there's a good chance (not always) that if he's hit, he will lose his balance and simply fall on the ground, rolling on the floor with inertia of his running speed.

When i'm firing a K98 at a sprinting russian soldier' leg, i expect him to fall head first. Then he's in crouch position, he can bandage himself, or try to get back on his leg before the second bullet.

Same situation when we shoot in the leg of a soldier in stairs, he has a chance to fall (not dying, but wounded.)

It would be so amazing to see that kind of stopping power in RO2.

Stopping power could be such an awesome feature. And the ragdoll system is already here, so I guess TW could make something, if enough people show their interest :)

Well, realistically most soldiers that get shot in the heart will pretty much drop won't they?

I slammed the door so hard with my own thumb being stuck in it (after slamming it 10 more times not noticing why it would not shut)

And I only felt it after 10 minutes (my thumb was hanging by 1 or 2 "wires")

So it could be true that you will feel a gun shot but if it hits the nerves you will only feel it later.

(I still have my thumb though and it works fine :D)

You're actually wrong, you're mistaking hollywood fantasy with realism. In the midst of battle you aren't even going to think about the shot. There's diaries from soldiers that were in the Somalian incident (Black Hawk Down) that wrote about how some of the Somalian insurgents were so fanatical that they'd take 1-2 5.56 rounds and continue, mortally wounded, as if nothing happened until they'd drop incapacitated or dead. Bullets generally travel through you, when you shoot ballistics gel it doesnt push the block back, it just goes into it.

Not for nothing, but this probably isn't the best example, a good bit of those soldiers regularly chewed on a leaf called "qaad" that was essentially a painkiller and mimicked the effects of an amphetamine and we're talking about a battle that took place over the course of one day and one night, not an entire war. The exhaustion and malnourishment of the average soldier around Stalingrad was quite a bit higher I'd wager.
