...be available to the masses of PS3 users eventually. Presumably this is the beginning for Valve. It's better margins than, say, going with EA as a distributor. Presumably Portal 2 will be the first since they have announced it. They'll probably give it away free to sucker all the PS3 users in. It does also mean KF or maybe a KF console version could happen as well. But what do I know....

Steam is coming to PS3? Glad I backed that horse. Out of all consoles at the minute I personally rate the PS3 the highest just because it doesn't balls around. It does what you want, and gives you awesome things like BBC iPlayer and now apparantly Steam :)

PS3 KF would be cool, I'd probably buy it again just for the LuLs. Although gameplay might have to be simplified a bit so a player on a controller could stand a chance :)

Steam is coming to Ps3 so will KF come to Ps3? etc.

I have mixed feelings about this one D:

Good points

  • TWI will make more money. A lot more.
  • People will discover Killing Floor and with luck, hear about KF on PC and decide to buy it again.
  • L4D won't be the only zombie co-op shooter on consoles.
  • The world can give that bloody game CoD a rest for once.
Bad points
  • The liscense to distribute to Ps3 would be expensive, right?
  • The KF community will be split like an orange.
  • The console version will be simplified and may get rated poorly because of the difference between that and the PC version. (KF was rated negatively by some on the first weeks of its existence i.e. before bug fixes and additional content.)
  • PS3 users won't ever become modders.
  • PS3 KF users will miss out on every single bit of community content - the one thing that keeps KF fresh to players every single day.
  • PS3 KF users may have to pay for all additional content because of PSN's own plans.
  • P2P hosting will most likely be a must. (Laaaaaaaggg)
  • Console gamers have different play styles (and these styles are quite limited) than PC gamers and KF will become "Generic shooter."

Although some of these bad points could be covered by:

  • A magical system different to P2P hosting.
  • Cross-platform gameplay.
  • The abilty to upload custom maps and mutators with a memory stick and allow it to be downloaded by other players.
  • The ability to browse available games.
  • TWI could make some agreement with PSN that all content (aside from character packs) will be free, unless TWI would rather have them pay. Money makes the world go 'round! :p

Actually it probably wouldn't be that hard to configure the main gameplay controls to the PS3 controller. It's all the shortcuts and voice things that would probably need working though.

That's the biggest problem there is, IMO. Not everyone is fortunate enough to buy a mic and there are a lot of people about who are hearing impaired or have speech problems.

Although If these 3 kinds of people were given the ability to type through keyboard support for the game, this problem will be gone in an instant. You just gotta hope they're able to get ahold of a keyboard.

Steam is not coming to PS3. Some features of Steamworks will merely bundled with Portal 2 (stuff like friends) on the PS3 and there are a few rumors that cross-platform play will exist between PC and PS3. At the same time, Sony announced a paid service for PSN similar to XBL.

There is no way in hell Sony would allow Steam as we all know it to be on the PS3. So what happens, we buy Portal 2 on PC so we get to d/l it and play it on PS3 for free? I don't think so.

At most we might get cloud support when it comes to save games.

So stop overreacting.

This. IMO, they meant "Steam Games", as previously, Valve had made a big stink about how they wouldn't develop for the PS3 at all. Now they will. That's it, pretty much.

When we (tripwire) know more about Steam on the PS 3 we will be in a better position to answer this, but right now we don't know enough.

But everything we've heard from Valve so far is good.

LOL.
"Steam" isn't coming out for the PS3, an "Valve" game is.
and as you said, that's Portal 2.
and they're releasing Portal 2 (not for free) on the PS3, because they also released The Orange Box for PS3, which has Portal on it.

You guys seem to be forgetting the bulk of steam is the steamworks functionality. What many see as Steam is just the store front (which won't make its way to PS 3 as far as I am aware), but it is much more. It is matchmaking, it is servers, it is auto updating, it is downloading, it is a master server, it is chat, it is trophy/achievement, is cross platform play (ps3, pc, mac).

(note all the above are things I have gleaned from watching interviews and reading the press release. I reserve the right to be wrong).

he's right [:

they're making "cross-over" play for PS3 for Portal 2 (and "possible" other releases) for PS3 players to play with PC/Mac players

they "might", and as the interviews and articles said, "might" release the other Valve releases that were on other consoles (maybe L4D, etc), but without crossover. L4D was mentioned, but never said they were doing it

they said it's possible, but might not even do it
they're focused on Portal 2

So, it's only a bunch of Valve games coming to Ps3.. So no KF?

(My points on a KF console port still stand! D:< )

if i'm not mistaken, we had a discussion about the possibility for RO:HOS to work for PS3 and how the potential for the console support of keyboard/mouse.......something about the fact that the PS3 supports keyboard/mouse for certain engines and i believe the unreal engine (idk which versions) is supported? if so, i'd love to see steam go crossplatform and allow for PC and "console" gamers to all use the same steamworks features like Yoshi said, matchmaking, achievements, community, servers etc..... especially if keyboard/mouse is supported and that way for more "PC" styled fps games like RO and KF could go crossplatform while not becoming watered down console versions so they could be used with controllers.

edit: remember all consoles are computers just like PCs......it's only a matter of time before somebody will be able to get all platforms to be connected. maybe Steam will some day connect all gaming platforms?

Console makers all actively discourage mouse and keyboard type controls and their use in console FPS and RTS. The reason they give is that because keyboard and mouse are rare for console owners, those that do have them are at an enormous advantage over people using controllers. They don't want that because they like to see a level playing field.

Until keyboard and mouse become standard issue in terms of controllers you will continue to see very limited support for them on console FPS and RTS

there is a company that makes a mouse and keyboard controller for the 360, so you can play the Xbox 360 games as if they were on PC, with keyboard and mouse, fully customizable keys/settings

i'm sure the PS3 might have something like that, or could easily be done

Which is why I didn't seem phased at all because it's nothing special.

All of that pretty much exists for consoles except for a master server and cross platform play (well some games are like Shadowrun).

I don't have a PS3 so I don't know how PSN works but I do have a 360 (yet I play my 3DO more often than this crappy console) so I'm sure it's pretty similar. I got 3 free months of Live Gold and barely used it but it features everything you mentioned.

Whenever there is an update the console has to download it, install it, then restart itself. The same for games except the game update starts when you put the disc in.

There is chat, there is matchmaking, there is achievements, and all that other crap that comes with horribad console multiplayer.

Which is why I'm thinking aside from possible cross platform play, the only useful feature will be cloud support (if it's implemented). Now I doubt saves could transfer from PS3 to PC but maybe they could go from PS3 to PS3.

hudson: what consoles can you go cross-platform between consoles or with consoles/PC? i don't believe any. you can't be connected to xboxlive via ps3.....the point would be that there could be one universal "cloud" connecting PCs with (insert console here), which currently if i'm not mistaken is not possible. meaning that PC players could play together with ps3 users, and maybe down the road xbox users and other console users.

what i would hope is that this would allow developers to release the same versions of games....ex TW releasing RO/KF on ps3 and PC and allow for keyboard/mouse with ps3. seeing as the game would be exactly the same and not a dumbed down console version, yes it would force console users to use mouse/keyboard, but it would give them the opportunity to play the game equally to PC users without having to purchase/own a good enough computer to play the game and instead use the console system (i.e. a computer) that they already have.
