Steam Chat Spreading Malware

Most people know not to click on suspicious links from strangers, but suspicious links from friends are more of a marginal case. Malefactors are currently using Steam, Valve's popular PC gaming platform, to spread malware by hiding a nasty program in a supposedly innocuous screenshot that looks like it is coming from a trusted friend.

Security expert Graham Cluley shared the story, which one of his readers brought to his attention. The malware comes via Steam's built-in chat client and, in all likelihood, will appear to come from someone you know.

If you receive a message on Steam that reads "WTF?????" and links to a JPEG image called "screenshot," steer clear and inform your friend that he or she needs to run a virus scan posthaste. The link leads not to a strange picture, but rather to an executable SCR file.

I wonder how they got it to propagate.

Its not the only thing there is going around. There is a hack in RO2 little twats are using that crashes the server and gets everyone in it VAC banned for the session. REal nasty

Yeesh. Had it happen to me the other day. Not the virus itself, but someone on my friends list sending me the messages.

ffs one of those phish accounts invited me to be friends. Be weary guys, steam is no longer safe.

When someone leaves one of these links in my profile on Steam, I report them to Valve with the post contents, and then delete the post. I think that is all I can do.

I've gotten them too, but it was from a friend who doesn't usually message me, so I was suspicious. Now I just ask the friend in a followup message if it was legit, and don't open it until he confirms. In this case, he said it was not really from him, so I never opened it.
