Reset is the only way to go, without question. I appreciate what I think are the reasons they considered it a tough decision but it's really what has to be done. I think them taking the decision this seriously reflects well on them. I can forgive the time it took to make such a decision. To announce a stats reset immediately would've courted a potential large scale player hiatus from the game early in the release; a marketing strategy nightmare in the midst of other problems with the release. As it is there are probably a significant number of players who have held off until this moment, but I think most have just played the game for what it is; an unfinished masterpiece. Yet players have no excuse not to expect a reset, it's the only reasonable thing.
Frankly once I noticed that I was ranking up inordinately I would have no idea whether any of my stats are legitimate, and certainly TWI would have no way of knowing, and I don't see how anyone can unless from day 1 they've played with a notepad handy and accurately keep track of every kill and every point earned manually, and watch their progression stats like a cat watching a mouse, double-checking that they accurately reflect the kills and points after every round. This strikes me as how Det. Monk would play the game (all the while noting every historical inaccuracy, of course).
Given this uncertainty, I just can't think of any time "invested" into the stats system as any more "wasted" than other gaming hours. I think of it this way: I've had a fun time sampling many of the unlocks and what it's like to be levelled to various levels, but as someone said right away, "easy come, easy go". It's definitely time for stats to work as intended. That was a fun preview, now let's get on with it. I'm happy it didn't take any longer (assuming this really does fix it).
I also hope, like it seems most people do, that the upgrades generally are implemented as optional, as soon as possible (before too many people start unlocking them). I haven't had the "good fortune" of "earning" (read: glitching) the scope on the Mkb, but if I had and it was not optional, that would make the Mkb a less desirable assault weapon for me, and I'd only choose it over the mp40 when I wanted a sort of hybrid-sniper experience (now I think of it, is the scope really just a balancing ploy to get less people to choose the Mkb once they achieve the unlock, to try to make it rarer than it would be?? --"is joke, tovarisch!"

). I generally choose assault class because I want to get into the firefights, not stand back at ranges where I need a scope. I won't mind having the the option to attach the scope in some matches, but I mind being forced to.
