If i was to just place a static mesh ladder would it be climbable automatically? or would i have to change something in it?

Thanks for the help all i really appreciate it :D

I have been to other forums but compared to this, this is a very helpful and mature group of people thanks again if someone manages to give me an answer.

You'll want to put a blocking volume around the ladder too and turn off it's collisions, soplayers don't get caught on the ladder.

AND.... think about the ability of players to exploit ladders. It is possible to get them in places where Zeds won't climb them or have to negotiate complex pathing to get close. Zeds WILL use ladders and it can be a nightmare getting caught on one, just be careful how/where you use them.

U need to make a ladder volume that is big enough for the player to climb up.

Warning this totally ****ed up and ruined my map. I had to delete it.

I would recommend using stairs in place of ladders. There's no animation, they're buggy, and they just don't look good. They're not in any official maps for a reason.

Care to explain this?
Don't know what his particular problem was but when I was playing with ladders I noticed it was possible to cause a sort of bounce effect whenever the player tried to go back down it instead of going up like I intended.

This wasn't a big deal if you jumped on the ladder and then went right back down because the bounce would be relatively small. But if you did this intentionally by climbing up high and then back down really quickly it would cause you to shoot up at such a high velocity that you would crater into the ceiling... and if you avoided the ceiling you would still take massive damage from the fall. Also trying to force people to walk down a ladder intentionally is kind of difficult. It feels very clumsy and more often then not people miss the ladder and fall to their deaths. Maybe I'm just setting them up really poorly?

My problem was that as soon as I went up the ladder the zeds just froze. And It a wasnt my path nodes because there was a direct path to me. But the just stood there. So I had to delete it. And as DrGuppy said stairs are just as good.

I've managed to set up 5 ladders successfully by using the legacy tutorial, they can be tricky and not look all that great, but it's possible. Specimen's work fine on mine, there's just no climbing animation.

Aside from that slight discrepancy... why do your ladders work and his do not?

I was planning to use two ladders in my map too (not crucial, but they would be alternative ways) but if they are so bugged that players get catapulted around and specimen cant use them I won't do it.
I don't care that there are no climbing animations. There were none in Half-life and ladders are all over the place. I didn't care back then, I won't start caring now. :)

So yeah, it would be nice of you if you could post a small guide or mini-tutorial about how you made them.

I feel the same way about climbing animations, I consider them a novelty so I'm not too fussed about that. It really does feel like climbing in HL.

It's been a while since I've added ladders so I can't remember from the top off my head, but I followed this tutorial http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/Legacy:Add_A_Ladder which I thought was posted above, but turns out that was something else.

From my experiences with ladders, getting the ladder volume the right size is the trick. Players have to walk backwards to go down ladders, so if the volume doesn't extend far enough away from the ladder, players will backpedal through the volume too fast and fall off the ledge. Also the only way to get off a ladder is to walk backwards from it once you hit the floor, so if the volume is too big, players will have to walk backwards unnaturally far from the ladder to 'get off' the ladder.

In my level most of my ladders are 48uu wide and 48uu long and they extend about 240uu above the ledge the ladders reach up to.

Also I just tried to do the 'bounce effect' and I couldn't replicate it.

Hope this helps.

From what I remember they can but I'll go check again to confirm, once this compile is over.
When I made my ladders, I put path nodes near them and tried a build all, once it compiled the ladders were built and the ai paths were connected to them :)

Yes they can. If u put a path node at the bottom inside the ladder volume and click view paths, The path node should be connected to the volume with a pink line.

But when I tried this as I said it all went completely wrong. I think it was to do with my path nodes though.
