Hi all,

Found a German film about some soldiers who go to fight in Stalingrad. Should arrive in the post in the next few days. I've only ever seen 1 film from the german's perspective of the war which was called "Downfall" and was about Hitler's last days in the bunker, I thought it was a very powerful film and i'm looking forward to seeing this one.

Has anyone seen this film? It's available on Youtube but there's only part 2 which has English subtitles, and since I don't understand German i've gone and bought the subtitled version.

Yeah some mates an i watched this recently, but had the dubbed version.
It seemed a bit random, but im not sure how much is lost in translation.
some battle scenes are great.

May have been translation mishaps but there were a few hilarious quotes/conversation.
One near the end about a stupid dream that made us all laugh

This is one of Germany's finest movies (after Steiner Part I;)) about the war from the view of the Wehrmacht. There is a good dsitinction between the Wehrmacht and the SS (which are mostly drawn together).

I'm definately looking forward to watching it. I also found there were 2 Russian Films called Stalingradskaya bitva I & II made in the late 40's. Apparently Pro-Stalin and no doubt full of propaganda. Still, i'd love to watch them but as of yet can't find the film for sale or download.

I watched it about a month back and it was a great movie. I really recommend to watch it. It's a bit differet from usual war movies, not making too much unneccessary drama, but shows pretty well how horrible it was for both russians and germans.

Another great movie about the russian front from german point of view is The Cross Of Iron made in 1977.

Ahh yeah Cross of Iron, I remember seeing that on IMDB i'm gonna buy it now, thanks for the reminder :D

Also slightly off topic, but the best war film I think i've seen is a Korean film called Brotherhood about the Korean War. The intro is beyond cheesy but when the war breaks out it's a very gritty and well made film.

Have it on vcr, too. You get what you should expect to get when buying german war movies: no needless hero-stories about one guy blowing up whole divisions or similar stuff, but the feeling at the end that you for christ's sake should really be thankful you had not to be there...

Stalingrad and Das Boot are among the best world war 2 movies ever made, both from the German perspective and by the same company if I remember correctly. I think the only good american ww2 movies I've seen is that Iwo Jima movie and Kellys heroes. Europeans make the best ww2 movies.

I've seen this movie for the first time when I was 12 or so. Quite shocking for me as a child. At that time in school actually ever teacher told me how evil German soldiers of the Wehrmacht were and how each of them deserved to die. Great stuff to tell a 12 year old German what filthy bastards his grandfathers and granduncles shall have been, don't you think?:mad:

Anyway, Stalingrad is a great movie and it's not such a hollywood production as Enemy at the Gates. I always wondered if there was a English dubbed version but never found one on the Internet. It would be interesting to hear the English voices for the characters.

Downfall is a good movie too, but I don't believe that Hitler died in Berlin, this man was such a coward and too afraid of death. He managed to get out with the help of Nazi fanatic Hannah Reitsch. German U-Boat technology at that time was this good you could easily go around for 6 months. This is fairly enough to get out of Europe and reach Southern America, just like many highranking nazies did. The death of Hitler is claimed true by a skull fragment and a wooden furniture part with blood in a Soviet archive, too bad that this skull fragment was part of a woman's head at the age of 30-35 and the blood being from the same person. Eva Braun I assume. Rochus Misch, one of the SS guards inside the bunker claims to have heard the shots. How could he if the concrete walls were this thick you couldn't even hear the generators (which were U-Boat engines) next door. How is he supposed to hear the shots of a Luger? He couldn't have. And he's telling the world his F

The subtitled version of Stalingrad is vastly superior to the dubbed version, it's rather odd if people are speaking but the lips of the actors do not match.

It's been a few years since I saw it but I remember it was rather excellent.

The downside of buying the UK R2 DVD of Stalingrad is that it is dubbed into English rather than subtitled and is sourced from a poor master. It ranks up there with Black Rain for being one of the laziest DVD releases.

I had the UK VHS which was in German with subtitles and wanted the DVD back around 1999 and bought the UK R2 DVD expecting the same. What a mistake that was. So I had to import the US R1 disc as it's in German with English subtitles. However whilst the US release by FoxLober has subtitles they are part of the picture, yellow with black lines and obviously it's another poor transfer

As far as I know the UK release of Stalingrad hasn't been updated and it's still the same poor 'Entertainment in Video' release. I keep meaning to try and find the R3 Korean or Hong Kong versions as I've heard they are quality transfers with english subs but have never got around to it.

Good luck hunting :)

Run, don't walk, to your local video store and get Das Boot.

My favorite WW2-movie is "Idi i Smotri" (Come and See). It really is beyond depressing, though... Telling about the Eastern front from a civilian perspective. For a Soviet movie it's not really classic propaganda-material (although it should be mentioned that it was made in the Perestroika-era). No mention of the "glorious Red Army" since it's set in Belorussia, behind the front line. Only partisans, who steal cows from poor peasants and hide in the woods rather than protect civilian villagers from crazed Dirlewanger-style Einsatzgruppen... It's just depressing (and through that probably gets close to what the reality must have been for civilians living on the bloodiest theatre of war in human history).
There is this one scene, when the Einzatsgruppen reach a village, that's so harrowing that it will make you forget the much more famous village-massacre from "Platoon".

Just looked this up, surprised i've not heard of it before. I'll try and get a copy, looks good.

Assuming I'm not confusing it with another, there's a really great long shot in Stalingradskaya Bivta where the camera pans over an apartment block and you can see the Soviets maneuvering through all the rooms via the windows and shellholes.
