The Resistance and Liberation topic in the Gaming forum got me thinking, what is the deal with a finite sprint bar?

If I am running on a track, at my top speed, once I get tired, I dont instantly change to walking, but I gradually slow down as I become more out of breath.

Since the soldiers in RO arent moving anywhere near a "top speed," Wouldn't it make more sense to have no "bar," but as you keep sprinting your avatar will get more and more out of breath. That means it will be harder to aim your rifle once you stop sprinting, but you don't have to deal with being out in the open and unable to move any faster.

Thoughts?

That would definitely be a lot better. The stamina should recharge a lot faster; like 3 or 5 seconds. No one is going to walk away from a grenade, even if you're tired.

TBH, I think RO's current way does all that.. except for the finite-ness of the Stanima... the more you run, the less STA you have left.. the more your sway (harder to aim your rifle).

Correct.. they aren't moving at top speed, nor are they running on a track.. you'll also find:
1- Soldiers aren't sprinters or track stars
2- Sprinters/track don't lug weapons/ammo/uniforms/wear boot/carry packs
3- soldiers aren't always in good physical shape... esp then alot smoked, and in war time, they may haven't had a good meal in a while or be underhydrated.

As for being out in the open.. I usually try and gauge my runs based on what I can cover.. run from cover to cover.. not in the open..

Would another way work? probably.. i'd have to play it and see how I feel about it.. the RO/BF2 system I'm pretty happy with.. esp in RO.. I just crouch walk or crawl for a few after I'm out of stanima, and wallah.. ready to run again. It gives you a chance to survey your surroundings anyhow..

Yeah, I also think this sprint thing could be better. For example a soldier would not start walking 10m before the enemy when making a bayonet assault, or when dodging a grenade, no matter how tired he is. Then from realism POV that crawling is another thing, IRL that's even more exhausting than sprinting so in order to be realistic there should be a limit how long you can do it continuously.

you mean similar to the way it is in ArmA?

Yep, both ArmA and the original OFP modelled this as well.
Imho, it's great. And while your at it you might also fix people sprinting up stairs, something both ArmA and OFP do very good as well.
The steeper the slope, the slower you move untill you literally have to crawl up the mountain etc.

If you really think about it, the "default" movement speed isn't "walking", it's more of a light jog. The only time you're walking in game is when you're reloading, in iron sights, etc.

Yes there is. The default key for walk is Ctrl.

It's useful to sneak up on someone. they don't hear your footfalls.

Ghost Recon 2 had it even better: If you ran up stairs you would take the first few steps with full speed and only after that you walk them up slower as if you were sprinting the first few steps and only lost your momentum afterwards.

Yeah, make it like it is in Flashpoint. Including the way hills are handled there.
NO! Flashpoint does it ok, but I tell you what some of the slopes I am forced by the game to walk up in OFP and ArmA I'd just motor right up in reality.

New Game...

New Game...

I'm sure when they move onto the new engine if they are truly making one this kind of stuff will be implemented. Just look at the game Gears of War on the Unreal Engine 3. Of course rumor has it Unreal Engine 4 is in the works or already out there.

Look how you can run, duck and get behind walls and lean etc. in that game just think of all those actions in a WWII game. Now that would be awesome... The things mentioned could or would be easily added to these newer engines. Also think of the map details, no more getting stuck on objects etc.

Remember folks RO was done on the Unreal Engine 2 and is like 8 or more years old I think... For those that don't know it RO was a mod first and hasn't changed much since. They aren't about to do a rewrite with it since they've fixed many of the issues the mod had and added newer features but this game as sad as it would be has just about run its course...
