Hey guys,

Imma be renting a dedicated server at the company I work for (SoftLayer).
I want to use it to run 5-9 Killing Floor Dedicated servers.

I was wondering if these specs would be good enough:

  • 1 X Quad Core Xeon 3230 2.6Ghz
  • 2 X 4MB / 8MB Cache
  • 2GB DDR2 533 / 667 ECC RAM
  • 3000GB Public Bandwidth
  • Free Inbound Bandwidth
  • Free Private Network Bandwidth
  • Wide Choice of Operating Systems
Other questions include:

Will 3000GB @ 10 Mbps be enough to support 5-9 servers per month?
Since the bandwidth will only consists of KF trafficking info?
(No mods have to be transfered to visiting players, since I play natural, so it's just trafficking info)
Any advise on the OS for the server? What's a good OS for Game Servers?

My company can give me enough info about the hardware in the servers but I don't know what my server needs to be able to handle, to succesfully provide 5-9 stable KF servers.

Thanks in advance guys.

Peace,
Xeonzs

I run my own dedicated server at my home (right next to me) and that seems fine to me. At the moment I run Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and it really is nice. Windows has the advantage of pretty much all programs out there will run on it and about a 1/3 (maybe?) doesn't run on Linux.

that is perfectly fine, but you might want to add a bit more RAM in the mix.
Linux is a good os, but windows is fine too.

Yeah I wanted to add some more ram, but that really ups the monthly costs, ups it by 50$ per GB added, 2 gb is free, so I would go from 180 to 230 :p

Imma see what I can do though.

Yeah I was thinking about going with Windows Server 2008 R2 since I've got experience with that, just didn't know if it was stable enough for games.

Thx for the tips guys.

my group is running about 40 servers right now, i'm not sure about the mem load for each one though, on my testing serverbox my server runs at about 80mb, but thats with my muts running, so i'm not sure what stock stuff runs at.

I run my KF service on a FreeBSD server. ucc-bin-real peaks at 100MB of memory and tops out at 14% CPU load. I can easily run 8 more KF services on this thing if I didn't need it for other things.
