There was an old Lutheran church in Stalingrad - just off the south-east corner of Fallen Fighters. I'll let some others find the relevant pictures, because I am too lazy/busy right now.

So - correct, it is NOT a Russian Orthodox church. But it IS in the right place.
Detailed research FTW! Take that rivet counters! Not that we don't appreciate your efforts to improve the game, of course ;)

Who the hell cares if the church was not an exact replica of the real church anyways? I personally think gameplay matters x10000000000000000 over accuracy.

Ofoucourse gameplay is in the end probably the most important thing, because there

I was expecting severly destroyed or completely obliterated buildings with fights going over rubble, on the street and the sewers at the same time.

looking at the fallen fighters map it seems theres a lack of obstacles in the square itself :(

Too many obstacles translates into bad gameplay. You can't have 500 hiding spots and expect the game to be anything more than a really boring version of hide and seek.

And to have "obstacles" in the square, you have to have something destructible to make them, which you don't tend to get much of in a bit of park. But there is plenty of cover!

As much as I agree agaisnt the idea of hide and seek game, it just seems a bit unhuman to have straight lines of sandbags like they did in RO in the middle of the field or something.

Now I obviously havent played HOS yet but I was just expecting there to be more heavily fortrified positions instead of random lines of cover like in some posted pictures.

I'm still looking for pre-war pics of the church :p. I think I see it in the panoramic shot?
Which direction is North? Or on what corner does the Univermag sit?

Yup, in that panoramic shot, you can see the Lutheran church - or what is left of it, about 100m from the "House of Books", which you can also see in the first picture.

First picture is taken from the west side of the square, looking east towards the river. The second is taken from the opposite end, looking back west. The panorama picture is taken from one of the sets of ruins east of the Univermag, along the north side of the square, view ranges from south-east through to south-west. It shows the ruins of buildings like the Stalingrad Pravda offices, the House of Pilots, the hotel (now the site of the Gastinitsa Volgograd, where we stayed) and the Gorky Theater.

If you analyze closely (and trust me, we have), you can spot the different construction tehniques, ranging from the older (pre-revolutionary) brick/mortar and stone, to the later (1920s/30s) concrete construction...

The church should be replaced with "The Church of Tripwire" so we can have a dedicated place for worshipping the gods of Tripwire =). Polytheism ftw!

on a side note, is that large pile of wreckage in the centre of the panorama the "technical college" from fallenheroes?
