Detailed research FTW! Take that rivet counters! Not that we don't appreciate your efforts to improve the game, of courseThere was an old Lutheran church in Stalingrad - just off the south-east corner of Fallen Fighters. I'll let some others find the relevant pictures, because I am too lazy/busy right now.
So - correct, it is NOT a Russian Orthodox church. But it IS in the right place.
Who the hell cares if the chuch was not an exact replica of the real church anyways? I personally think gameplay matters x10000000000000000 over accuracy.
It's details like that Lutheran church that make these places come alive and feel "real," even if players don't directly notice.Of course gameplay is king - BUT, I for one want to feel "Stalingrad" too. Not just some "I-think-it-might-be-Russia-or-is-it-Normandy?" vibe![]()
I was expecting severly destroyed or completely obliterated buildings with fights going over rubble, on the street and the sewers at the same time.
looking at the fallen fighters map it seems theres a lack of obstacles in the square itself![]()
And to have "obstacles" in the square, you have to have something destructible to make them, which you don't tend to get much of in a bit of park. But there is plenty of cover!I was expecting severly destroyed or completely obliterated buildings with fights going over rubble, on the street and the sewers at the same time.

Yup, in that panoramic shot, you can see the Lutheran church - or what is left of it, about 100m from the "House of Books", which you can also see in the first picture.
First picture is taken from the west side of the square, looking east towards the river. The second is taken from the opposite end, looking back west. The panorama picture is taken from one of the sets of ruins east of the Univermag, along the north side of the square, view ranges from south-east through to south-west. It shows the ruins of buildings like the Stalingrad Pravda offices, the House of Pilots, the hotel (now the site of the Gastinitsa Volgograd, where we stayed) and the Gorky Theater.
If you analyze closely (and trust me, we have), you can spot the different construction tehniques, ranging from the older (pre-revolutionary) brick/mortar and stone, to the later (1920s/30s) concrete construction...
Probably - but it was actually the "House of Pilots". One of the "House of Specialists" in the area.on a side note, is that large pile of wreckage in the centre of the panorama the "technical college" from fallenheroes?
