Hello, I have been wanting to get back into level design for awhile and I was thinking about a map set somewhere near Malaya Zemlya. I haven't found much in the way of history or maps and I was curious if anyone had some good source material? I'm guessing that most of it would be in Russian which I don't know.

The battle seems pretty intriguing, I have been searching the internet for hours and can't find much more than a blurb here or there. I scoured Google earth and I'm trying to correlate the location of war memorials with some travel notes I came across. I imagine I will end up making a small scale map based off my imagination more than history but it would be fun to learn what really happened.

Thanks.

There is always Google Earth for landscape ideas and a look at the actual region.

For these types of smaller scale battles that fit so well in the RO style maps, online searching is too cluttered. You'll probably have to go to the more scholarly print sources. Books with in depth history of the East front will have a lot more than you'll find online for these types of things.

Sometimes the book still rules! :)

That Wikipedia entry was confusing and sparse, so you should definitely find some books in the library to find out more.

I just had a quick look in Google Earth, and the area looks like a good candidate--the hill is a constant slope uphill, and there are many random rumples in the still remaining farming fields in the area. They look like you could embellish them to at least mostly hide a hunched over infantryman. Harbors are inherently interesting, so you can have one of those, and the little town and villages could be sprinkled around. You could make the map into a fight for the harbor only, or a 2 hour fight for the entire area. If you make a day version, it could look very pretty, with mountains at one side and the sea at the other, and if you make a night map, you could try to get a nighttime naval battle on the horizon. So it sounds good to me!
