Can't wait to hear the new sounds. Knowing Xancerman's work in the mod version, I bet they'll be very good, if not better. Didn't know you actually recorded the sound from a real MG-3 btw.

What is this distance-based sound system by the way? Does it mean that you can hear all gunfire across the entire map, and that a distant rifleshot actually sounds different (very muffled and flat) that one up close (loud)? Will Ostfront have sound travel times?

The thing that is wrong with ALL games is that gun sounds are to low compared to the ambient. And this normally results in these kind of discussions.

Many other games do like has been described they make the gun have a bassy sound so it sticks out more from the ambients but is in turn not at all like a real gun firing.

If the gun sounds where much higher then the ambient sounds, footsteps and people breathing, like it is in real life. I doubt anyone would complain about them sounding "weak" etc.

But instead if you would like to have any hearing left at the age of 30 you would need to turn the volume down of your speakers/head phones to have a comfortable sound level you would hear none of the ambient sounds.

On a sidenote many of the RO players have been asking for upping the sound volume of things like foot steps around them. And even some of the realism "freaks" in the RO ranks have argued that, it is a realism thing to hear footsteps without having to turn up the volume resulting in uncomfortable noise levels from the guns.

Just standing beside a MG firing 7.62 mm rounds at 700-800 rpm without hearing protection will make you not being able to have a conversation with another person at a normal voice level for quiet some time afterwards. It's even more unlikley you will hear any footsteps.

I agree that I don't like all of the gun sounds in the mod but they are good and are pretty damn close to sound like real guns.

I have ever noticed firing a particular weapon sounds very different then being diagonally in front of the weapon at a good distance awy from it, and sounds different again when a fair distance 90 degrees to it.

I think your going to get differing sounds dependant on where you are when the gun fires, behind your going to get more of a tinny sound due to majority of the sound moving forward down the barrel, whereas in front it is more of a crack.

I don't think could be programmed in, but may explain peoples differing perceptions.

While I was down in Alablama visiting my family I got to fire an old mosin (wierd sight setup, identical bolt mechanisms). My cousin said it had some serious kick, and maybe it did relatively, but it didnt seem that bad. Also, the sound is not just a crack (I was firing in a 20 acer clearcut) its a crack and then the sound sortof expands out from the muzzle and heads of in the direction of the bullet (hard to describe but i have the same experience to some degree with every weapon I fire). I'm not sure the current sound for any gun in any game captures that expansion and then "shooting off" of the sound.

Oh, and about the DOD:S MG-42 sound; I do like it more, but I think it's becuase it has more bass to it, the thing with the RO sound (and no offense) is that it sounds too metallic maybe lacking that bass "thump" to it, and the rate does seem a tad slow. One technical question though: How is the mg42 sound linked to the bullets being fired, becue when I fire bursts sometimes the sound feels really wierd (like out of sync) but maybe thats just the tracers messing with my mind...

I agree, there isn't much bass to the gunshots, but as far as I can tell, it's realistic.
I've fired guns before, all of them have been a loud CRACK, none of them have been bassy.
Xancerman knows what he is doing.
