Sorry, but why exactly is map whitelisting really needed?

WOW, who knew one little topic could cause such a debate. IMO I don't think you will ever truly stop leveling. An example would be the prison map. It was very well made and I enjoy playing it, but there are certain areas on the map where the map maker did not put Zed paths down all walkways. This allows the entier team to huddle in a corner and mow down the Zeds with out ever having to worry about something behind you.

Now I relize that it is not a true leveling map, but it is one of the few that I've been able to complete start to finish without dieing once. Unless someone puts a ton of time into testing every spot on a custom map, things like this will happen and people will use those camping spots to their advantage.

Must of the times I play, I'm to busy tring to keep my a** alive to notice what everybody eles's level is. And if they are a level 5, how would anybody ever know how they got there??

Let the debating continue!!!

I have to agree with Chef.

Can't you see people? You are keeping this subject as a taboo and not even trying to think otherwise. Whenever someone says something about KF-Leveling everyone in the forums are screaming: "HERETIC!" and pointing fingers.

Open your minds. Maps like KF-Leveling would not change anything. The game would be fun and everyone would be pleased. Or are you just jealous if someone else has greater level than you?

Kf-Leveling doesn't hurt anyone, but Tripwire wanted the perks to be hard to get up to level 5, not taking around 3 hours.

Interesting point. What should one do after he gets his perks on lvl 5? Quit playing since he has "completed the game". I don't think so. I would like to know what did TW think when they decided this thing.

Will Tripwire have resources to keep track of the mods and maps, and update the whitelist after say 6 months, when RO:HoS will be priority?

It's also a huge disadvantage to those who are building maps, they need to wait weeks to get public opinion, while the current white listed ones will enjoy popularity. Also, most people looking for a custom map just look at the white list, and probably "White List Map Packs" will appear in the future. Further disadvantaging new modders.

Team Fortress 2 also had an achievement madness for a long while, but Valve didn't freak out on it like Tripwire did, neither it did hurt the game.

I think having a "master control" over the modding community will hurt KF in the long run.

I don't see a few weeks being a problem, people can still play the maps if they want to. I mean it is only a few weeks, don't people have any patience so things could get done properly? It always seems that most people want things done NOW :p

I don't think all the KF-Leveling abusers realize how easily they got off this way...

Tripwire could've been really nasty and taken away perk progress...or done a total perk reset. At least they're letting them keep using the farmed perks. So far, at least

Yoshiro has hinted that they're working on a way to deal with illegitimate Level 5 Perks on the Steam Forums! http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10559013&postcount=68

As can be seen with Red Orchestra, we support our games beyond a 6 month period. We will continually update the White Lists and if we lose the ability to support it properly, then we may turn it off at some point. For now, though, this is the way things are being done and we will be updating the Map White List frequently enough for it to be seamless to the community.

Also, please note that before a map is White Listed, players can still play with their current Perks, they just can not progress. So inserting a few new maps onto servers in the middle of a bunch of White Listed maps shouldn't destroy your user base. If you believe it will, however, just wait the week for the map to get White Listed and add it to your server then.

This really isn't as intrusive as many of you are making it sound. We are reasonable people here, we are all gamers ourselves, and we all play our games along with you guys.

I really don't understand either why people are complaining.
People cried for map whitelisting before the update, to get rid of maps like PerkBuilder and Leveling.
Now TW gave us what we wanted, map whitelisting and are doing the best to update it on time.
Perks are not gone for non whitelisted maps, they just don't progress.
I don't understand why server admins find maintaining a map list difficult, they should check the maps whitelist regularly and add maps only after they have been whitelisted.
I understand the frusturation of map makers, but it's not that bad and should even reduce the amount of final versions like, KF-SomeMap-FINAL, KF-SomeMap-FINALFINAL or KF-SomeMap-LASTFINAL. In my opinion version numbers the best, e.g. KF-SomeMap-B1, KF-SomeMap-B2 for betas and KF-SomeMap-V1, KF-SomeMap-V2 for releases.

I guess we just don't have anything useful to talk about?

Throw us some of your plans or something, it's not like we can talk about up and coming features/content :p

How is perk boosting fun?

The fun of leveling up a perk completely legitimately with friends is amazing..

I'd like for people who consider maxing out their levels to be "completing the game" to quit. Then those who play the game because they enjoy the game will be left and we can have fun without this perk-grinding silliness.

This.
Also those who complain about anything game related are retarded. Back in the mod days bugs/exploits random shlit we wanted fixed had to wait for months and sometimes years. We DIDN'T WHINE ABOUT IT ENDLESSLY.
Harden the funk up.
Its a game. Jeezuz.

In case you haven't noticed, they approve pretty much any legit map, period. So long as it's not a blatant perk-leveling map, it gets approved, even if it's by all means a terrible map. So no, this isn't going to cripple the mod community or hurt the game...

seriously, white-listing is a good thing, and entirely reasonable

plus, a good side-effect might be that it gives a certain 'legitimacy' to custom maps that will perhaps give players who always thought less of custom stuff more confidence in it

it's like a dev seal of approval for all custom maps submitted for it - that pass of course - that's sorta cool, right?
