the hero system will probably be based on a game by game basis instead of a persistent system. Whoever on the team is scoring the most teamwork points like capturing objectives and things like that will be offered to spawn as a hero class w/ the added perks. After the round/map/game is over then it starts over again w/ someone else being able to try to make it to the top.

Nope, they've got a persistent rank system. Ramm said there's going to be something like that (I think it's in the PAX interview thread) but overall there is a persistent progression system.

I can already see that my time will be completely occupied with this game next year.

so becoming a hero will be related to what rank you are?

I would've thought it would be based on your performance as a player not just rank.

My guess is it will be a combo of both. Say when a round starts the higher ranks will be hero's able to pick the elite class. As you play rank doesn't matter as much and someone with a lower rank who is doing well will get a chance to be a Hero.

what's the point of saying something like that? they're not going to change it as it's become one of the selling points of the game. "heroes of stalingrad"

also, there's nothing to suggest that the systems will be mutually exclusive. i think the hero status will be dynamic and based on a server to server basis.

I've been playing games since around 1994, and I simply do not understand why people love these ranks and achievements so much. I savor the moment-to-moment gameplay. It's even worse when it's a shooter like BF or MW2, because the experienced players have the equipment advantage but the noobs are the ones who actually need the handicap of superior gear.

If anything I'd say the criteria for who gets to be the hero should be tied solely to your kill/death ratio across servers and nothing else. This way a skilled but new player would take precedence over a mediocre veteran. Whoever can put the weapons to the best use should get first priority.

Sorry to semi-necro this topic, but I just have to say how impressed I am with this community in general. I've never been a big part of it, and just generally a lurker on the forums, but I've loved RO since the retail release (I know several of you guys probably loved it before that). Unfortunately, the sickness that is "leveling" is spreading through every type of game, and I was so disappointed to hear that it was an integral part of RO2 I had given up on it some time ago. Now, out of possibly misplaced optimism, I come back to see that it might not be so bad after all (sounds minimal at this point). I still won't be playing on any "ranked" servers if the hero status offers any direct advantage at all, but the fact that at least unranked servers will exist is promising.

This post wasn't meant to be so much about the game though, it was just the incredible sense of warmth (so rare for me in general) I got from reading this thread. Actual honorable players that realize the best players should not also be given the best weapons (or that any player should be given the "best" weapons for that matter)!?! People that understand a game can be good (and in many cases BETTER) without progression!?! You guys are awesome. I just wanted to say that no matter how good or bad this "hero" stuff turns out to be, I'll be sticking around these forums just because there are some opinions here that I really truly respect.
