Toughest part about sniping for me is leading shots against running targets. I can do OK unscoped, but the magnification just throws me way way off.

That said, I enjoy it, though I suck at it.

I turned my graphics down just to play sniper.

Sniper is really challenging IMO, dialing the range can be tricky. It seems that once you get a feel for judging distance it becomes a lot easier. Don't expect any Enemy At The Gates shots in your first play-through. Scoring head-shots is really, really hard unless you're taking out an MG or something.

Being able to switch from scope to iron-sites is ****ing incredible though, there's no doubt about it. Since you can't peep over cover unless you are aiming it's a good call to switch to iron-sites just to scope the battlefield. Once you spot some enemies then you can zoom in and try to kill them.

I would not recommend sniper until you've gotten a feel for the maps and lead-times. Usually only one sniper per team is allowed, and if a noob chooses the class then it can be a disaster for the whole team.

Noobs: learn rifleman first like a true recruit :p

That's the one reason I use unscoped rifles over scoped. Although, with the new 'dialing-in' feature, the sniper rifle could be much easier to learn. I can't wait to get home and try it out.

Haven't tried it yet, but I have noticed something; the people grabbing the marksmen classes are usually the ones trash talking andscreaming about how buggy the game is...

Hey, all. This is my first posting, and this is the first game I have ever played online/multiplayer.

I enjoy sniping quite a bit- it's all about the hunt; I suck at hitting moving targets, however. The bots dance about like they're on crystal meth, so of course I end up capping alot of players. I do, however, prefer to take out machine gunners and in Rising Storm the flamethrower guy.

I have only played online for one whole day and learned pretty quick that some players hate snipers; one of my own teammates followed me around backshooting me. Funny thing was, I didn't have a sniper rifle. Just a bolt action in good defensive positions. So I left that server and went elsewhere.

I still get killed lots so I don't really see that I have an unfair advantage.

Got any opinions?

well yesterday I was on Hanto on the Jap side, and now that I made hero for squd leader, flammer, rifleman and auto rifleman I was using the M1 Carbine as my jap SL loadout and flanked to the far right of the river to that slit trench, and was picking off enemies defending the main cetral part of the line, then one of them tried to flank me on my right, I popped him as he was trying to sneak up, then again, he tried it, popped him again. Then I planted a booby trap where his usual route was, then moved somewhere else to take an objective, and a few mins later, he stepped on it, thinking I was still there :3.....so, he switched teamsand joined my squad, and began tking me over and over hahahahahaha!!!!....man I mustve gotten him flaming pissed :D he was like some little level 50 something noob, it was great!

Not my favorite class, I find the sniper only has an advantage on long ranges, but it's hard to find a good location with a good view range.

Especially in RS, the close combat is a lot more important. Sure I can get a few kills with it, but I'd be better of rushing to the objective and getting in the cap, it would be a lot better for the team.

Sniping can be fun, but it seems to me that most maps just don't got the space that makes scoped rifles more effective than normal bolt-actions.
Hunting enemy sharpshooters seems just more fun and effective as rifleman than as marksman.

Maps are to small and need to become bigger:IS2:

Playing sniper on Iwo Jima as American is easy and there are a few spots to actually help your team a lot sniping the enemy's MG's and snipers. I don't really want to brag about it but as sniper for the Allies my team has never lost (Classic mode that is). I end up with 30+ kills every round. On most other maps I suck but there are only few maps that favour the sniper way of playing anyway.
Actually there is a spot where you can shoot almost all MG's and cover all bunkers if you can make shots of 250+ m.

Snipers were badass in RO1 but I have a few problems playing them in RO2:

  • The zoom mechanic makes unscoped rifles better than snipers, offering considerable magnification with way wider FOV
  • Not enough room for them on most stock maps, the game focus is obviously on urban environment and CQC
  • Since all weapons are highly accurate it's easy to get "sniped" when playing as sniper especially considering you are static most of the time
  • The movement in RO2 is way too twitch and it's really hard to hit people flying up and down rubble/elevations/stairs all while zigzagging like marsupials

I only tried sniping on Bridges of Druzina recently. Was good fun but i always kill far less than i do with a regular bolt action rifle.

*edith* its a ****ing chore anyways since your rectangle in the scope dissapears or is pixilated at random when having to play on LOW. Only solution i found is to throw the rifle away and pick it back up. Sometimes the weapon just dissapears or some firendly nearby picks it up thinking you threw it away to now snipe with your pistol.

Spot on..

But I dare say RO1 is way better than RO2 in terms of shooting in general not just sniping.
And the reason for that is that the net code or whatever made the shooting far more predicable even with high ping.
I don't know what they changed since then but my LOVE for the game is gone.

The same mechanics still applies in RO2 for ranged shoots but it feels more like a lottery now than skill.
The only thing RO2 does better is the adjustable range on rifles and scopes.

The hardest shot perhaps in RO1 was to shoot the Tank driver true the slit while it was moving 30% sideways at full speed.
You could see the bullets bounce of the armor but ever so often when you scored a hit! You felt like opening a bottle of champagne.
Shots like that was hard, but possible, most of all it required skill.
Killing Tank commanders was fun too but they where a piece of cake compared to the driver.

Good ballistic simulation together with prediction is the core of the game.
I've been hanging around playing RO2/RS to death hoping things would improve where it matters the most to me.
And that's ballistics. It is THE factor witch have kept me and many others in the game all thees years.

RO2 is a great successor and RS is a breath of fresh air.
But I'm sorry to say, believe me, that neither of them gives me a feeling of opening a bottle of champagne.
Don't get me wrong, its still fun in many ways but leading targets is no longer what it was.

Well that's how I feel about the game today.

Speaking of simulation.
Sim racing with Grand Prix Legends was my primary PC hobby/sport before RO1.
If you enjoy Champagne moments ;) Check out the updated demo I made for it back in 2004.
Why should you try it? Well good simulation lives forever, just like RO1

Ro2/RS maps + the 'red screen of death' make sniping a chore since sniper rifles only > bolt action after 150 meters or so. There is only a minority of gameplay instances where it would be dominant.
