I'm just writing this post because I have been playing Demolitions almost exclusively for the past couple of months and recieved no end of complaining about filling the area with smoke and blinding everyone. Grenades produce this effect too but aren't as bad.

My thoughts are that smoke effects should be changed a bit so that they don't obscure people's vision so much; or at least reduce the opacity and/or duration of the smoke. I don't want to feel guilty chosing Demolitions anymore.

Thoughts?

then dont spam nades and aim at the ceiling/walls indoors, if you're blinding your teammates constantly you aren't playing demo correctly ;)

the smoke is there for balance purposes, and it is fine.

I agree, I've always felt that the smoke is too much. I don't see why these weapons have a huge smoke trail when in fact they aren't supposed to:

Future Weapons: M32 Grenade Launcher - YouTube

Perhaps it's just there for balancing, but it's more of an annoyance than anything. The smoke from the grenade explosions also seems to linger a bit too long, but that doesn't bother me too much.

maybe its some smoke for the area to? like when you shot at dirt it will make the dirt go everywhere. maybe the maps are dirty *** hell and when you shot a grenade all that dirt fly's everywhere by the affect of the grenade...

i like that smoke. then ppl don't spam all that much i think.

The fire from the flamethrower how ever is a pain in the ***! i like that's its realistic an all but it still sux when you can't see **** and the pyromaniac is all, i don't care i light this hole room on fire just to think i do massive damage to the fp and sc when they come.

but no the smoke is all good where it is! and yes the flames are to.. its just the players that are wrong some times:)

It's not about spamming or even shooting indoors. When you fire a grenade/missle at a group of enemies or at large enemies, it tends to piss the rest of the team off (especially sharpshooters) as they can't get clear shots. And how is saying that you shouldn't spam grenades a valid solution when the M32 does just that?

Nothing to do with balance either. The demo suffers from lack of proximity protection and relies heavily on other team mates to kill things like rogue crawlers/clots without having to pull out a pistol. THAT is where the Demo balance is. Smoke doesn't hinder the demo player anyway; just everyone else on the team.

See if they wanted to go for realism they should take note of that video that you linked. The smoke in real life is no where near as dense AND disappates really quickly.

thats odd because i've never had a teammate yell at me for taking out a crowd of trash or for putting down the FP if i have a clear line of view. Yes the M32 has spam capabilities, but you should really only use this if the team is in trouble or if you can take out a huge group in the back or for fleshpounds. 2 or 3 shells at MOST is plenty for most small groups, and if you stack a hand grenade, that damage boost is pretty powerful. without hindering smoke, everyone would run around the map blowing everything to pieces.

and Destyre, it is balance, because what hinders the team, hinders you as well.

Yes, and also on the video the power of granades fired is much lower as is the area of explosion.

Fine, but does it have to obscure the view of everyone? A plume of smoke in the demo's face would be much better.

Yes it does. When a grenade kills a specimen that specimen is just as dead to all the other players as well. AoE kill means an AoE balancing.

The smoke is to prevent demos from spamming 10 feet in from of the team with impunity.

Nah, the smoke looks out of place as it is. It's not there for balancing reasons either, imo.
Grenades had overdone smoke from the get-go before the demo perk was even in the game. Not to balance them, because no one in the history of KF has ever not thrown a grenade because of the smoke effect. Cost and availability, yes, but the smoke effect, while annoying, never made anyone not throw a 'nade.

For consistency's sake the explosions of grenade-launchers look similar to the grenade explosions now so the initial, annoying but ignorable flaw got dragged along and it's a real issue for the demo perk now.

IF the smoke is so opaque for balancing reasons (which I highly doubt) at least change it so it's darkening what's behind it and it fits better into levels, visually. That white always out-of-place looking smoke looks horrible.
IF it isn't so opaque for balancing reasons then change it altogether and make it less opaque in the process.

Only TWI can really know, but either way, something should be done about this.

i would much rather see the m79's alt. fire switch to buckshot rounds, or the magnum have its weight returned to 2 instead of minimizing smoke.

the only people i've had complain about smoke are lower level newbies "who cant see the monsters" when im shooting nades at them to kill the mobs that have surrounded them and are quickly hacking away at their health.

I don't see why the whole team should suffer because of one noob's actions though.

Please re-read my original post in this thread, specifically the part where I talk about the smoke trail being too much. I don't care so much about the smoke caused from the explosions. :)

I think as well as the empahsis on teamwork and balance for the class, one reason for the smoke being the way it is is so that your feel like you just hit that zed wih a freaking nuke.

Think about it, how crap would that explosion look in Zed tme if you got this nice flash, good amount of blood, then this naff little whisper of smoke with it? IMO quite alot.

Leave the smoke as it is, if nothing else, its cool for newbies :)

once again, this isn't an issue with the smoke, its an issue with not playing the class correctly, a good demo will retain visibility for the rest of his team for the majority of the game, obviously there are gonna be some instances where one cannot help but obscure the view, but this shouldn't be happening a majority of the time.

Indeed, just like how most people on other perks spraying 9mm at two Scrakes and one Flesh Pound that wiped the whole team...
