We are seeing a lot of total conversion mods popping up so far, but what I'm curious to see if there's any interest in a single-player focused mod for the battle of Stalingrad?
I don't know about you, but I would LOVE to play a solid single-player mission/campaign with Red Orchestra game-play mechanics. And the best thing is, I think this would be a feasible project for a smaller team (smaller than IE and RS for example). A good single player mission could be created by simply reusing a stock RO map and creating 1 scenario around that. Very little new content would be required, but it would still offer something new and fresh for a good RO experience.
-LESS WORK = MORE FUN SOONER
The best thing about a mod like this is the mod team wouldn't be bogged down by creating vast amounts of new content. They could just use the tools that Tripwire has to offer. New maps, soldiers, weapons, tanks, etc. wouldn't be necessary, as the mod team could just use what tripwire provides them, create 1 really cool map (or reuse a preexisting one), and then build the scenario around it. Granted it would still be a lot of work (especially on animations and scripting I would imagine) but altogether the whole project could be very focused. Instead of spreading the mod team thin on cranking out mega content, they could concentrate on story delivery from the start.
PAVLOV's HOUSE, for example:
Using Pavlov's house as a prime example of a 1-map campaign scenario (everyone loves to defend against hordes of enemies), I think that this kind of mod could turn out to be very enjoyable.
And the mission could be as long as the devs want to make it last. The scenario could have waves of enemies last a long time, with dialogue in-between (during the fighting), it could transition to night time where you might have down time, or you need to scavenge German bodies for ammo/food, or need to go out and repair a downed T-34, then book it back to the house. Maybe you need to take the position of a downed Russian MG? Also there would be lots of room to make use of ambient things, like playing "katyusha" when the Germans ask for it, or being able to explore Pavlov's house, talk to the civilians living there (weren't there some civilians still in the basement?). In my opinion it would be very interesting to play as the soldier and really experience the full range of battle, such as waiting for the enemy to come, prepping, getting woken up out of your sleep and to the sound of frantic alarms that the enemy has snuck up on your position.
I always like getting to know certain characters in the campaign that you fight, eat and die beside. All of this to me is what an epic single player could provide, and seeing as RO2 will be the best game ever
, a solid single-player mod hopefully will find its way to the RO community.
