...how about adding a shovel as a melee unlock. You would have to choose bayonet or shovel on the class screen just like you choose which rifle/SMG to use.

I actually think it would be kind of cool to see that as upgrade.
Though what are you thinking, have your character magically hit with shovel instead of buttstock/bayonet, or have it appear as an actual weapon, and have to select it first before starting to swing it around?

And for those worried about "realism": Germans were scared $h*tless of the Russians using their sharpened around edges sapper shovels

I'd like to see it as a separate weapon with its own animation and everything. It might work better or make more sense if your gun could be shot out of your hand like in RO:OST

No no no, you've got it all wrong. You should be able to mount the shovel in the bayonet lugs of your rifle! :D

What a ridiculous suggestion!

But since this game has taken this kinda direction (fast-paced matches, skillpoints/cheats, unlocks blabla) why not add a shovel? Mix that with the zombie mode suggestion and add a supermega arcade mode and this game would become even more accesible.. oh, wait, what.. I just...

Sounds cool but realisticly you would not have your field shovel on you while in direct fire combat. Too bulky regardless of the period pics you see. Now if you want to have them laying around to be picked up for use then cool.

HET, a frontovik always carries what he needs to live. A saperka (shovel) is key to survival and would NOT be discarded less you want someone in a blue hat to spot it and give your family a long vacation in siberia.

Give the saperka option to all assault classes.

On a unrealistic but still pretty awesome note, give us the option to run at the nemtsi with a pistol in one hand and saperka in the other, ala brest krepost :p

Some VERY good shovel action there.

in most german accounts i read they mentioned using shovels for close combat and other mentioned that bayo was considered obsolete.

Hm. The Russians are charging the Germans through an open field and are not being suppressed by a single enemy mg (and of course the other way around, the Germans casually advance and let their tanks get shot to pieces without any infantry support whatsoever, or being suppressed by Russian mg fire). Not exactly the most realistic representation of events.

Problem is, why would you even want a shovel instead of a bayonet? Even for for assault, how often do you run out of ammo, in front of the enemy and have time to switch to it.

And as for the Brest Fortress scene, it certainly cancels out the opening scene from Enemy at the Gates.

The idea of using shovels as close combat weapon appeared in WW1 where it was more usefull in confined space of trenches. If sharpened its properties are similar to those of an axe, so its a very good melee weapon. As for assaults, yes, IF you run out of ammo, but then you'll be glad you've sharpened your shouvel. Also if world collision will be introduced in RO2 properly, some poeple wouldnt like bayos on their rifles, or if its going to impact accuracy and sway, or just remove it for cosmetic reasons.
