sub-division modelling is kinda like "meshsmooth" in 3dsmax, as for maya (as I assume you are using) I think its the "Smooth" tool you use, Its been years since I used maya (maya 3.0 I think it was), and the modelling tools of it where awfull for my taste lol, *hugs 3dsmax*

The last update looks detailed, if you're going to texture it in the future its better to rather trying to model it in a "singel object" as much as possible, as of my expirience. Because if you have alot of objects in the scene, they will need texture and that takes up much time to texture a map for every singel object, but if its just modelling then you're fine...
