The slots you see on the tank in-game are exclusively viewports, to my knowledge. They utilize Panzerglas, which is meant to be resistant to damage, and historically, tanks carried replacement glass for the view slots. They're just meant to give tankers a better, albeit still limited view, of their surroundings.

I would love to see some usable firing ports for tanks in the future, though. Tanks often stocked small arms to use with the portholes, and it would give the tank an additional form of anti-infantry defense that could be especially relevant given that tank crewmen cannot bail anymore. I also think that Nahverteidigungswaffen should be installed on tank turrets as well, but that's probably pushing it. :p

AFAIK (which isn't much TBH), the small "slits" that you speak of weren't just simple little slits but rather short para-scopes that were .5 - 2 inches higher on the outside than in to prevent small arms fire from killing the crew.

Now I could be wrong about this, but if I'm not, I imagine that this will be the case in game making it impossible to kill the tank crew with small arms unless the commander or driver has their hatch open (I think it was briefly mentioned in a GamesCom or E3 vid that you could kill the commander and driver when they were exposed like this).

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, just don't be a jerk (there's no need and I already admitted that I may be wrong).

I especially relevant given that tank crewmen cannot bail anymore.

I believe this was changed. You can't bail out on tank only maps, combined arms is free game.
This is all hearsay from Beta reports though, so grain of salt.

Also I'd think you can put a 14.5mm bullet through those bullet proof glass right?

That's awesome if true.

I'm pretty sure you could get the 14.5mm to at least leave Panzerglas unusable, though I'm not sure of the thickness of the Panzerglas off the top of my head. It was mostly for protection against shrapnel and small arms fire to my recollection, not against AT-rifle fire, so I imagine a PTRD/PTRS could penetrate the glass and hit someone inside. The only matter is hitting the glass, because a lot of view slots tend to have metal visors over them, making that shot more difficult at ranges that don't involve being exposed to the tank in question.

In one (or several) of the videos they state that it's possible to damage tank optics with small arms.

Would make AT rifles more interesting, less shooting tanks, more shooting vision slits to kill the gooey filling.

I imagine the shot would be difficult at any range. The vision slits are so tiny compared to the rest of the areas of the tank.

I guess they are considered weakpoints. So i bet they are favorit spots for anti tank soldiers

Hah! If Tanks were to be given even more anti infantry power they'd have to be given more weaknesses. How about explosives in socks full of oil to blow out the tracks and the ability to open up the blow off the main hatch and rain down hell fire on those inside?

Or just throw a molotov on there and see how long it takes for them to roast in their giant oven.

Can some dev or beta tester confirm this?

No, you could not as mentioned many times before these areas could be closed off by armored shutters. I even dug up the old Stug.gif. Look below.

Shut the vision slits (applicable to cupola as well):

periscopes were more prevalent on later tanks. I believe the panzer IV has vision ports, not periscopes... at least for the driver.

While many tanks had shutters, I'm wondering what the vulnerability of those shutters would be to repeated hits from a PTRS. Homogeneous steel degrades after repeated hits.

Vision slits are separate to pistol ports though, which you can, and were designed to be fired through.

About 0% as the pivot points are all internal and the shutter itself is excessively thick enough to stop PTRS rounds.
