I find it bizarre that they spent hours and hours and hours slaving over minutia regarding the interior..... then they dumbed the gameplay??
How do I stop the idiot AI from shooting the main gun when I'm in another position? I mean, I wouldn't mind too much if he didn't totally suck and getting the round on target. All he does is give my position away and depletes my ammunition.
Maybe the devs would be smart in hiring Amizaur (AB) or Shurek (DH) to rip everything out and start over again with the tanks. You have got to be kidding? Sure RO2 needs some tweaks and fixes here and there but it's nowhere near the Benny Hill-themed vanilla RO1 tanking with extremely exaggerated angling advantages, slow fire-ball projectiles and really simplified damage model.
Unless you're talking about tanking in DH which is pretty damn solid, or maybe the Armored Beast mod which at least makes the tank combat playable, but vanilla RO1? No, just no.

I actually tried it again a month ago or so but DH, the AB mod and tank sims like Steel Fury: Kharkov 1942 had spoiled me and it was just simply unplayable.
All in all I'm impressed with the fidelity and the extremely HEAVY feel of the tanks in RO2. It certainly feels like you're driving around in a big, heavy, noisy tank and not the RC-cars of RO1. I simply love all the little rattling and "clonk" noises happening. Mad props to the sound guys of this game.
One of my biggest complaints with RO2 tanks that I haven't seen mentioned yet (granted I haven't read every single post so excuse me if it has) are the penetration and ricochet sounds which need some variation. The volume of them also needs to be lowered greatly when it's other tanks taking the damage. Sometimes it's hard to know if it's you being shot at or your buddy 50 meters away. A hit to your own tank should be VERY noticeable.
In DH and Ro1 I feels much more immersion than I do in RO2. Tank Combat feels to me like the Tank Combat in COD3 (may have been 4 whichever was WW2 desert). Anyhow that is what it reminds me of. The intensity in RO1 is much greater imo
Have no idea why you had such a hard time with Tank Combat in Ro1. Never heard of Steel Fury so I have no point of reference
Here's another problem that is kind of a balance issue: The T-34 has zero commander vision slits. That's how it was, and thats how it is in the game. That's good.
Where did you get the idea that I had a hard time from? It certainly isn't mentioned anywhere in my post.
Let me simplify it a bit. Let's say you're used to eating delicious cake, could you go back to eating buns that spent way too much time in the oven and where salt was used instead of sugar? No, of course not. That's how I feel about vanilla RO1 tanking with no mods.
I simply can't go back to driving an RC-car around and shooting fire-balls at people, where you just have to angle the tank a bit and it becomes invulnerable to everything you can throw at it, when I'm used to the MUCH more realistic tanking in DH and even RO2. Even though RO2 still has some flaws it's still much superior to vanilla RO1.
Hell I'd just be happy if I knew WHO was in the tank with me if I'm team tanking. Everything else has already been spoken for the OP.
You can always check the squad list to see who's in the tank with you. I guess it's a bit of a roundabout way but it works for now. On another note, is there a way to actually give orders to the guy in your tank using the same voice commands (go right, left, stop etc) as you can give to the AI? They always stop working once someone gets in the tank with me.
You said it was unplayable so to me it seems you had issues dealing with it. I played it and found the tank combat to be extremely fun challenging and felt realistic as much as a game could be and more so than anything that came before it that I have played.
I still used the left and right turn as if I am commanding the AI. Its up to the player driver if he wants to listen. In the one instance I had someone with me, he actually listened well, just a bit slower than the AI would have.
Unplayable in the same way as World of tanks is to me. There is very little realism involved in vanilla RO1 tanking and therefore not any fun to play when I'm used to much better tank games.
