Comrades -
Coming off our discussion of the SU-76 and the panoramic optic scope (PG) that it uses, I'm offering up some more info.
Required reading. Based on 76mm regimental gun, but still appropriate.
Interestingly the panoramic sight has remained basically unchanged in over a century. It's a variation of a copied German design (Rundblickfernrohr) but the makers of the PG-1, PG-2, and PG-4 panoramic scopes, the "Novosibirisk" company, recently celebrate the 100th anniversary of the design. This description fits for the ZIS-3 type gun, as well. The optical reticle is different (slightly simpler) as it is the earlier design in this 1938 manual.
Laying the gun for artillery (including unseen targets)
This is a good overview of the whole indirect fire discussion, like I said before, its hard to explain to gamers without them falling asleep, but this sort of provides a nice graphical view.
(It's Russian, just pop the url into babelfish or your own favorite trans)
P.S. for gearheads: the reticle I posted before for the SU-76 is correct as I've recently gotten a russian manual that describes and displays the reticle for the PG-2 that went on the ZIS-3 for the SU's gun.
