Comrades -
Coming off our discussion of the SU-76 and the panoramic optic scope (PG) that it uses, I'm offering up some more info.

Required reading. Based on 76mm regimental gun, but still appropriate.

Aiming the weapon:

Interestingly the panoramic sight has remained basically unchanged in over a century. It's a variation of a copied German design (Rundblickfernrohr) but the makers of the PG-1, PG-2, and PG-4 panoramic scopes, the "Novosibirisk" company, recently celebrate the 100th anniversary of the design. This description fits for the ZIS-3 type gun, as well. The optical reticle is different (slightly simpler) as it is the earlier design in this 1938 manual.

Laying the gun for artillery (including unseen targets)

This is a good overview of the whole indirect fire discussion, like I said before, its hard to explain to gamers without them falling asleep, but this sort of provides a nice graphical view.

Super neat. This is the one everyone wants to see. Using your optics and the deflection of the artillery gun against a tank, and how to correct your shots.

Oh, just read the whole thing, already!

(It's Russian, just pop the url into babelfish or your own favorite trans)

P.S. for gearheads: the reticle I posted before for the SU-76 is correct as I've recently gotten a russian manual that describes and displays the reticle for the PG-2 that went on the ZIS-3 for the SU's gun.

Gotta love babelfish:

To the well trained gun crew, which works with the regimental or the divisional musty smell or with the divisional howitzer in order to lead instrument to the firing position

*Edit* - actually it IS written that way in Russian as well:

Хорошо обученному орудийному расчету, работающему при полковой или дивизионной душке или при...

must be a typo. - It should be пушке - meaning 'gun'.

oh I'm sure there's tons of mistakes in the babel trans :D...but the manual is still elegantly written imo... :)
well organized - cleverly explained, etc.

WOW, a great resource :) and a very nicely done manual by the way, IMO :). I wonder how it compares to German military manuals of the same era. Guess that very well, didn't see any of German manuals but read that before the "Tiger fibel/Panther fibel" the German manuals were very technical and rather boring :)

It describes everything it should, including things like shell ballistics, ballistic coefficients, gyroscopic effect ect, how to aim indirect and direct fire, and even goes into theoretical questions (why not make very long projectiles). Well after all it's an learning artillery manual and not a simple technical manual of something :).

Great thing and the translation, though funny, is good enough to read :).
