If you time your jumps correctly or just spam it all the time, husks will often shoot in the air instead of the ground and it makes them much less of a threat. Also, what outofrealman said about taking less damage seems to be true.

The disadvantage of course is that it makes you hard to hit with medic darts and may be annoying for other players.

As for moving faster or slower, my experience says there's no difference.

If your running somewhere and want to move faster, always jump when heading downhill, otherwise run normally.

Beware that you can take damage if you start moving too fast.

Always jump. And strafe.
Medics love that. Yes.

I often jump and it has saved me many times from husk fireballs, gorefast's second swing, etc. There is really no downside to doing so. Bunnyhoppers are extremely easy to hit with heal darts if you aim for the upper torso. This is as long as they're not strafing, of course. :D

1, Medics love it when you jump and strafe or generally spaz out.
2, Sharpshooters love it when you block the headshot on the FP or Scrake
3, Demo (and nearly everyone else) loves it when you block their 'nade throws.
There must be more...

If you want to avoid an imminent melee attack while running, bunny hop.
Even if you do get hit, if they're doing a multi-part attack, you'll take lesser damage.
Particularly handy for speedy Medics, and against FPs, GFs, Clots, and Pat.
On lesser difficulties, it can confuse Husks' aim. On harder difficulties, he calculates your midair trajectory or something, so it only makes you more predictable and easily hit.
It seems to be entirely useless against raging Scrakes.

Not relevant, but self-healing while a Scrake is slicing you up is a net loss of health on your part, and during this time, you're causing no damage to him. So never do that, ever. Shoot back instead.

Jump at the right time screws husks aiming at all difficulties. The only problem is more than one husks.

Just to be accurate, jumping doesent make your character less accurate.
You will always hit on center of the screen.

Yesterday I was lagging in an odd way where as I ran, about a fifth of the time I got no where, because I kept jolting back in position. Rushing to the trader, my teammates were running circles around me.
Jumping was quite a bit faster in that particular circumstance.

Regarding strafing, you'll need to check the actual speed in the coding. In a purelly mathematical approach, in many games you can run faster at an angle while strafing+moving forward because the sum of both speeds, even though they are 90
