Hello.

I do not know if this the right place for this type of post so if it is not, I apologize

I am a fairly experienced Red Orchestra player and have played it for a while. I have always been interested in how people create different maps but have never taken the time to see how they do it.

So out of curiosity, I registered myself here on the forum to see if there might be someone here who can explain to me how to make a map.

All I know is that you use the SDK but not how to use it, maybe there's any good site for beginners without any knowledge at all.

Take a look in this forum on the stickied threads, there's a good guide about making your first functional map. To start off with just make a map that works to your satisfaction with nothing in it, then make a crappy map with proper terrain and things in it, and then once you've done that start on the map you intended to make from the beginning. There are a million little things that you can only learn by trying out the SDK though, and if you have any questions look through the this forum and you'll probably find an answer, and if not just ask and people usually will answer.

But my biggest suggestion which I wish I'd listened to when I started would be to not drag and drop static meshes from the browser. Always select what you want then right click -> add static mesh, or better yet use the static mesh button on the left panel.

Welcome, SqueezeMe! You have just become a member of the "bad crowd" your mother always warned you about. Learning how to use the SDK is not difficult but it does require a certain commitment to pain and suffering so be ready to put in some long, frustrating hours. Add me on Steam (same name: Catalavos) and I'll be happy to help get you started or answer any questions you have. I don't know much but I'm happy to help where I can. I may not answer you right away but I will always answer you by the end of the day.

What a warm welcome :)

So this morning I thought I test the SDK little more than what I have done, I tested Danhs tutorial on how to set up a game and its a lot to take in.

I followed it step by step and while having your tip Dziga to start of small in the back of my head, eventually I had a functioning map :)
I decided to add a couple of statics just to see if it worked, I also noticed that you had no weapon or model of the character.

I added you Catalavos on steam in case I run into any problems :)

Its part of nymets link, but make sure you set the game mode to territories by searching mode in the world info properties as well.

I have one question for the moment about textures on the ground like grass, dirt, sand and so on, how to I place different textures on the map?

Most general questions can be answered by searching through UDK tutorials or forums.

Basic tutorial on how to create a terrain and add

Basic tutorial on how to create a terrain and add…: http://youtu.be/5HoAh58tkPY
Get yourself familiar with the tools that is explained in the tutorial, don't bother with layers and terrain painting just yet.
I'd recommend not doing the texturing (it's called materials, textures and other effects create a material) for now, setup your terrain (basic layout of it, nothing fancy.) Add a dominant light. Then from there add your desired spawn locations with their volumes and actors, and add the objectives as well. Once you put those in create the sequence of how the capture points will work. Once that's successful THEN proceed onto working on the details like Static meshes, terrain painting, deco layers and other stuff. Trust me I know, this may seem stupid, but in the long run it makes sense. (It's how my first map came out, don't do what I did....)
I personally used this tutorial when I started with the SDK (after fiddling around with it for hours..)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_expuF5SyA
It's a little longer (50 minutes I believe...) But it goes in depth into what, how, and why, it also goes into decolayers as well as Terrain materials. Not to mention it explains how some of the tools can be useful for specific things.

A question about buildings.

I am trying to replicate the buildings in Apartments, I guess they are made by the brush tool. Does anyone know the dimensions of the walls and the floors?

A couple of things I've learned about making buildings:

1. Start with the staircases. It takes most of the guess work out of figuring how high to make the ceilings.
2. Make your interior walls 8 UU's thick
3. Make exterior walls 16 UU's thick
4. Put the windows 48 UU's above the floor
5. Make floors 16 UU's thick.
6. You can strech/shrink all the stock static meshes by changing the draw scale (on the x, y and z axis, respectively) in the static mesh properties. This will often be necessary when working on things like trim, doors and windows.

Or just copy the brushes from apartments to your map. I "borrowed" a couple buildings from stock maps for my new map and then modified some of their dimensions and changed materials so you really would not recognize them, but it does save a ton of time.

So I've tried to learn the basics of the sdk for a while now and I feel that I want to take it to the next step, creating a map.

Couple of questions about map creation.

- How should one prepare?
- How to get a good layout between each cap?
- Minimal/Maximum distance between each cap.
- How should you proceed when you have a basic layout on paper?
