It worked fine in the Beta. TWI is going with the mouse because it frees the movement keys for other functions. If you go back to movement keys for aiming, then you loose those other functions - besides making it mouse clicks on icons on the screen (which people would complain is gamey and breaks immersion).

i'd like to give players the option to keep using keys for aiming the tank's main cannon. my solution would be to allow players the freedom to assign the keys they want for "cannon aiming" and for "movement directions".

i personally use arrow keys for movement as infantry and for aiming my tank gun in current RO. what would be nice is if say, i could assign the arrows of my numpad for issuing movement directions to the driver. likewise a person could use wasd for infantry movement, arrow keys for tank gun aiming, and wasd for tank movement directions.

i never particularly liked the mouse aiming in RO mod......so for me i'd like the ability to keep using my arrow keys :)

I'd personally prefer mouse or joystick aiming over Button aiming in Tanks anytime. And its historically more accurate imho, since you'd been capable of steering the Turret with different Speeds (in the PzIV at least if memory serves me right).

And you can't get different Turn Speeds (up to the Technical Max due to Turret drive limitations) with buttons. They build in a accelerate phase in RO:OSt to compensate for this.
But in my humble opinion Mouse Aiming is better, though allowing the option to Map the Turret Movement to Keys might help mapping it to a Joystick ^^.

Behold, the solution to "more buttons needed":

I really hope that they leave the button settings in. For me, it's MUCH easier to aim precisely at long distances with the keyboard. Need to adjust your fire up just a tad? Tape the elevation key. With the mouse, you have to hope that you move it just right, and don't accidentally move your gun horizontally, or god forbid bump your mouse the wrong way.

It's not a question of having enough buttons - they're trying to make managing a tank with 1 person possible, so you need to give commands to the driver whilst maintaining control of the turret and the first person perspective inside the tank. A mouse system is the easiest way for that to go down.

I'm sure if they don't have the button settings it'd be a fairly easy modification you could make to your ini's/settings to create a "virtual mouse" and assign it to keys.

It all soungds pretty good, however the idea of AI populating the tank when only one player is in it to me is worrying, especially when they mention if you are driving they will gun etc.

Knowing ROOST AI I can just imagine driving a tank while the AI constantly spams machinegun fire at infantry 2 miles away and spams the gun the instant an enemy tank comes into view. Giving away your position constantly.

I imagine there will be commands for FIRE/HOLD FIRE.

I'm also a bit skeptical about the AI. Instead of promoting teamplay in tanks, it does the opposite. Everyone will be a gunner, giving commands to the AI driver.

Plus the above-mentioned problem of the AI spotting things when they should have been concealed, etc.

Hopefully AI populating tanks will be a server option.

Well since 90% of public play people are tanking alone anyway...

wouldn't it be easier to use wsad to give directions to the driver and the arrow keys to move the turret? you could even press right shift to shoot instead of a mouse click to make it easier

You do know that in ROOST, those are used to give tank commands. Now if you use those keys, you'll need different keys for those commands. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

I liked everything I've seen so far and am really looking forward to this... :IS2:

..but one thing got me worried. I see a problem when team tanking with a friend in combination with not being able to enter or leave the tank.

What if my team tanking friend gets killed at his crew position, but the tank and I survive?

  • Will he have to wait until I die too? Am I forced to commit suicide to be able to spawn together again?
  • Will he spawn in his own tank, resulting in us not being able to team-tank anymore? (Since we both cannot get out)
  • Will I be forced to drive all the way back to the re-supply area, after which he can finally spawn inside our tank?
  • Will he be able to respawn inside our tank unconditionally?
  • Will he be able to re-spawn inside our tank when no enemies are near (perhaps after a small tactical retreat), just like squadmembers can spawn near their squadleader?
When entering/exiting tanks is not supported, I would definitely prefer the last option. Perhaps support this for Steam friends only?

Speaking of Steam friends, I would love to see the option to automatically unlock the tank to your Steam friends.

Another thing I am not very fond of, is mouse aiming for the main cannon, unless something is implemented to prevent the tedious lifting and dragging of the mouse.

Well they're suggesting using the arrow keys to give directional tank commands, which would replace the movement keys on the keypad. So at this point we're just shifting around keys.

Actually, now that I think about it, the command scheme in ROOST has plenty of AI commands on the keyboard, while retaining the arrow keys for turret aiming. It's just that the AI sucks so nobody ever uses them.

AI nothing. I use the vehicle commands when team tanking cause I'm to lazy to actually use my mouth to speak. Plus, a lot of the players seem to be Russian, and understand the ingame coms better in their native tongue.

I assume he will respawn in one of the AI.

ROmod had mouse aiming and I didn't like it, also about the AI in tanks, basically, a team of 20 with 12 tankers can choose to have 12 tanks that are AI controlled and 8 infantry or 4 tanks and 8 infantry. Well that's a bit unfair for people who like teamtanking. I don't know how the AI will be but it has to be fairly decent for all the people who like solo tanking more.
If the game had a set amount of tanks, like let's say 6 tanks, some people will be forced to team tank but at least it would be fair.

never happens to me, have you seen a doctor? it might be symptoms of carpel tunnel or parkinsons. seriously, my hand does not move involuntarily, and my shots go where i aim them. must be a unique case for you.

True enough, but my point stands that there's still more than enough keys to have directional commands AND keyboard turret aiming. WASD for general directional commands, the numpad for more subtle commands (e.g. "move foward 10 meters, turn left 5 degrees, etc.") and the arrow keys for turret movement. Or any mix and match version of that that you'd like.
