RO:O on OS X/Parallels?

I was just reading that the newest version of Parallels for OS X, in release candidate status now, has OpenGL and DirectX support. People with Intel Macs, Windows and Parallels in theory then could begin playing some Windows games ... if everything works, and works well.

I'm curious as to whether anyone has given this a try, or other games of similar demands (e.g., maybe other games with the same engine).

Macs are a relatively small part of the market, 'tis true. But I really, really, really need to shoot my brother-in-law, even if it's only via Red Orchestra.

As far as I know, no one has tried running Ostfront on a Mac via any kind of virtualization. (I would have, except mine is a G5)

I don't know about parallels, but I know that if you dual booted, you *should* be able to run it, as long as your hardware meets the system requirements. The largest obstacle you would have would be meeting the Graphics Card requirement; the integrated chip that ships in pretty much every mac except the high-end iMacs and the Mac Pro line will probably struggle with RO.

As for parallels...if they do in fact have the DirectX support and your hardware can handle it....it should be at least theoretically possible.

Either way, if you do decide to try getting RO to run on Apple hardware, please tell us how it goes, I for one would love to hear if it can be done.

Eh, if nothing else, I'll have to wait for him to upgrade Parallels, then wait for another round of guest passes to come around. -Then- I can try to kick his ... =) (If TWI wants to offer another guest pass at the appropriate time for testing, he'd probably be willing.)

He's on a Mac laptop, oddly enough, so it could be a really interesting test. But RO:O seems to care a lot more about the processor than the video ... to whit, I'm running Intel video on a laptop but with a Pentium M 1.73 ghz that performs around a 3ghz chip, and RO:O is pretty darned playable. If he's got a dual-core processor as I think he does, he might be able to spare the extra computing overhead.

(For what it's worth: Some games just utterly fail on my computer because of the _soundcard_, which is really annoying.)

The system requirements of DirectX 8.1 or lower excludes many newer 3-D titles which prefer DirectX 9. It also means that the http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/experiences/aero.mspx
