This game isn't another US WW2 shooter.
Then what would you call it?
It focuses on US Forces fighting in WWII in the Pacific.... seems like another US WWII Shooter to me.
Strange reasoning. As if a game is solely defined by it's setting/ theme.
It plays a pretty big part of its definition and it's not that strange really.
It might be strange to people who live in the US whom are accustomed to many US based war games, but many, including myself, outside of the US are getting pretty worn out on the whole US vs. the World Scenario.
I'm not trying to say that this game is a US vs the World game, but what brought me into RO was that there were different battles, different countries and many different weapons being used.
In game, I have used:
Colt M1911A1
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
M1903 Springfield
Thompson
Grease Gun
BAR
Browning M1919 MG
Bazooka
Shotgun
and many other US weapons in such games as:
Medal of Honour
Day of Defeat
Call of Duty
Battlefield
Darkest Hour
Wolfenstein
+ all their re-hashed do overs that came out afterwards of many of those games.... and obviously not including the other games I never even bothered to play.
Then add on top of that all the Modern Warfare games revolving around the US.
That genre of FPS's, both WWII based and Modern Warfare based, are simply way over saturated.
And yes.... the Pacific Front in WWII hasn't been done as much as the European Front, but it's still been done more than enough..... at least for me.
Give me other countries, give me other fronts.... give me the desert.... give me other areas of Europe fought by other allied forces..... show me the Aussies doing their stuff in the Pacific..... anything other than the same old same old.
New gameplay mechanics and new visual effects added to the same weapons, the same forces and the same battles doesn't really appeal to me, certainly not enough to make me want to pay for it.
I mean no offense to the Americans in these forums, but I need a break from the GI-Joe Rambo stuff being thrown into my face everywhere I turn when looking for a decent FPS.
The reason why I'm so sick of the same weapons and same battles from the same allied nation is because there's no learning curve left to tackle. It's all the same weapons, which all basically operate the same way as the next game.
Picking up a PPSH, PPD, DP28 or another Soviet weapon was refreshing as they sounded, operated and aimed differently from the same old same old.
Even using the German weapons in RO was refreshing as most of the US based games didn't allow you to play as the "Bad Guy" or if they did, you had a selection between the MP40 or the K98.... and once in a while, a mounted MG34 or 42 somewhere on the map.... and their operational mechanics were done badly.
I liked Day of Defeat's british battles cuz you had the Sten MKII, the Enfield, the Bren Gun, the PIAT, etc.... and they too were in Darkest Hour, but again.... most maps I was able to join into online were all US and hardly ever came across any British/Canadian forces maps.
.... that and I felt the weapons in DH were designed badly.
But everybody has their preferences..... the above are my preferences.... and to me, my reasoning behind it all isn't strange in the slightest.
It's the same reasoning I used when I decided to stop playing the BF and CoD games.... played one, you basically played them all, except this new one has more bloom.
