First off, let me simply say that I Love RO! I've been playing it on-and-off since it's release on UT2K3, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase of RO:OST.

However, I was dissapointed to learn that modellers and skinners couldn't add in their own custom models to the game they bought. I know that this is to cut down on cheatinh. (Removing v_models, or even modelling a giant 3D crosshair and etc). But why remove the ability to add our own textures? Thats one thing that can't really be exploited easily... and it gives us that customizable feel, like enscribing our name into the side of the gun. I know that you can change models and skins with a server-side mutator.. but it wouldn't be to everyone's taste, plus you'd have to download a lot of files.

If you took this option out due to cheating.. whats to stop people taping a red dot to the center of their monitors? Heck, if we could add our own weapon models to the game, we could have fixed the whole "Kar98 stuck on Safety" thing by now, heh. And also, model-exploiting is rare, especially in games such as this.

And there are some REALLY nice modellers out there. (Don't get my wrong, RO:OST has the best models I have seen in a game to date, really). But a couple years down the road, it would be nice for players to update their arsenal with higher polycounts, or sharper textures.

If we had the ability to add in downloadable skins and models client-side, then everyone would have their own personal tastes satisfied. Sure, I know some people would replace some models with fictional guns, or weapons that are not historically accuarte - but it wouldn't change the game for anyone else. Changing the model wouldn't effect any physical characteristics of the weapon itself. So it's really up to the personal taste of the user.

What is your opinion on this? As a retail product, such modifications by users should be permitted.

Thanks for your time,
-Sid

You said yourself, changing models/textures clientside will be exploited for cheating, with models even more easily than with models (like bright blue/red skins for the teams...).

And concernig the tape or dot on your screen: two things prevent this: free aim (the gun shoots where it points, and NOT at the center of the screen) and parallax. Due to the (plexi-)glass in front of the monitor, you would have to be exactly alligned with the center of the screen. If you are not, the marking would be slightly off. This effect is called paralaxing IIRC ;)

fictional guns? yeah I play with one every day, it's called "RO's variation of MP40" (like different subspecies and stuff ) :D
But anyway, good idea, I'm all for it.

And I think bright yellow or orange models will not be as problematic as 5thSS Wiking on Barashka running around in green summer Heer uniforms...

if you can add your own textures then someone somewhere will add a bright pink one so he knows where everyone is.
Also people can put a red dot on there screen all they wont, they still wot hit anything. RO uses free aim meaning if there was a xhair it would be floating around the screen not fixed in the center.

sounds like one of those boogeyman stories about nasty cheaters everywhere replacing textures and models with pink crap.... blah blah blah. How about green german uniforms on winter maps vs. soviet winter camo? Isn’t that cheating as well? So please… it is not even funny. The cheating version is a nonce, keeping in mind all other games out there that allow you to modify textures and models in one way or another.

Sure it's possible, cheating that is. But really... No offense intended.. aren't we being a bit paranoid? How many people are going to go through the bother of painting their guns bright green? Or turning the whole model see-through? Even if they did so, it would be around 1-in-a-whole-lot-of-players.

Maybe give us the option? Those who want to keep RO the way it is, could, and those who want to exchange their MP40 for a Sten MKII.. go for it! I'm not trying to endorse cheating or anything... I -Love- customization... it's just that the game gets old after a while. I Love the animations and the guns and the fluidness of it all... but sooner or later it's bound to get old.

vonRas has a point. So what? There's already "cheating." Russia dons snow covered clothing while the Germans stick to their dark green.

Germany has a Tiger tank that toally pwns the Panther. (Arguable, yes.. but still.) Ya know where I'm coming from?

All I'm saying is that it would be nice for talented people to upload downloadble content for other users.

And really.. how many people will cheat like that? For one, it's a game.. theres bound to be cheaters anyways. :/ It's not all that fair (for lack of a better word) that we cannot load up some awesome models just because one or two people will cheat with them in some way. What about people that turn their gamma up? The game becomes brighter, thus you're able to see better. Or the people that turn their settings way low for better performance when they do not really need it? I know it's a little extreme, heh... but do you see what I mean?

I really apolagize if the tone seems a bit harsh, I really, really don't want to come across as complaining or anything. I'm just trying to explain from my view, I guess. :)

Cheers,
-Sid

Couple minor points, real quick. First, German soldiers in Russia weren't initially equipped with winter camo for the most part. What little there was went fast, so soldiers were left to scrounge what they could - which was mostly nothing. Winter clothing in general was in short supply, witness all the photos of German soldiers with blanket strips wrapped around their feet and hands, heads too.

Second, the Panther is actually a more powerful tank than the Tiger I. Seems hard to believe, but it's true. The Panther's 75mm KwK.42 L/70 has better penetration than the 88mm KwK.36 L/56 of the Tiger I at all ranges under 2500 meters or so. The armor on the Panther was also much more well angled, which increased effective armor thickness significantly. Although the steel itself wasn't as good as that used on the Tiger, the slope made up for most (if not all) of the difference. Simply put, the Panther was one deadly machine.

That doesn’t mean that they should run around on a 1943 map in summer uniforms.

Besides, russians didn’t have it either, a standard winter camo (if any) for a russian soldier in 1943 (or any other year) - was a white blanket or a bed-sheet, with a hole (Or more advanced option - one and two (operation Uranus, 1942)). in the game they look like elite НКВД Осназ (OSNAZ) fighters with expensive ammunition, and camo....:(

Also the quilted topcoats, felt boots, and fur lined hats and gloves that were common to virtually every Russian farm. The Germans were quite simply ill-prepared to face the winter. Most of them didn't have their greatcoats, gloves, or overshoes because the High Command didn't expect the war in Russian to last until winter set in. That's why yes, you will see many, many pictures of German soldiers in summer wool uniforms trying (often vainly) not to freeze to death in the snow.

One of the myths that originates in 1941/early 42.

But not three years in a row. So we are talking about two Jan. 1945 maps and one Dec. 1942. Even though it's theoretically possible to have none-camo uniforms on Kessel, but still, it's hardly acceptable to have green summer uniforms in December. And even if it IS acceptable, what about helmet camo, for instance? (like this - 1941, leningrad). (btw I do like summer uniforms in the game, they just need some minor details here and there to be added and they will be almost perfect).

True, but most of those pictures have german POWs on em, and yet you have tons of photos from 1941/42 winter that say the opposite

Why not simply send in Models/Textures in to the DEVs and they could add them if they are of a certain quality... just a thought...

Well i think the dev left this how it is so you can better recognize team players, although some russian dont have white camo either if i remember, but could be wrong or different map.lol

one of the things i love about the UT engine is exectly that you CANT change all the textures you want.
in Q3 is was hilariusly eazy to change everybody into bright green and have them be visable everywhere.
in UT it would be eazy aswell if it wasnt for the hash chech the game dus on all your files.

if you want custom models and textures start your own server and add them its not verry hard then.

I love such answers! Ignore ALL the mistakes and just do it yourself. Well I guess it's time to close up the Ideas and Suggestions and the Bug Report sections of this forum.:p

Yes, German soldiers wearing Russian felt pac boots and Russian winter camo. Seen 'em before.

wearing Russian felt pac boots - maybe, there is nothing wrong with it.

Russian winter camo - I wouldn’t say that if you aren’t 100% sure. The fact is - they are wearing a camo, thus, sorry, your argument is only partially valid.

The first thing I noticed in the screenshots for RO was the reed green HBT summer uniforms, and I though that was a nice bit of historical accuracy, until I realised that it was the only German uniform in the game(except for the greatcoats worn over them on a few maps).

The map briefings list actual units, so it would be nice if they had some different and more accurate uniforms(eg: Kaukasas - the germans are supposed to be mountain troops, who wore completely different uniforms to regular infantry).
