Was running fine yesterday, now Red orchestra gets to the Twipwire logo and then crashes back to desktop with this error

Build RedOrchestra_Build_[2005-11-27_10.48]
OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: AuthenticAMD Unknown processor @ 2614 MHz with 2047MB RAM
Video: Radeon X1950 Series (6666)

This is a computer I built a few weeks ago. I MAY have gotten the same error upon initially attempting to play Red Orchestra (I got some error, I don't recall what) but then one day it didn't pop up and I was able to play since.....and then now I get this error...

TIA :)

This error has only cropped up over the last couple days or so. This leads me to think that some other program has been updated on a few people's systems that has affected RO. Try killing off programs and processes that may have been updated in the last few days and try running RO again. For example some people have had problems using Xfire in the past, so if you are running that try quitting it and seeing if that helps RO run.

Post back if you have any success please!

I restarted, that didn't help. Then I think I restarted later on, and played an hour or so later - and it magically worked. Any programs open were open again when the game worked (aim, msn, xfire.)

Quite random. There was nothing running prior that wasn't running on the second attempt! I'll let you know if it happens again.

It started doing this error on my other computer too. Except the 3rd time I tried to start Red Orchestra it worked. So this appears to be an annoyance bug.

I'll post the specs of both systems. I'm not sure if it's hardware related but maybe a pattern can be found?

System 1

Windows XP Home
Asus A8N 32-SLI-Deluxe motherboard
AMD FX-60 Processor
2 x 320 gb Seagate harddrives
Sapphire Radeon X1950 XT 256 mb video card
Creative X-FI XTreme Music sound card
2 gigs Ram
700 watt power supply

System 2
Windows XP Professional
Asus K8V SE Deluxe motherboard
AMD 3400+ Processor
1 x 300 gb Seagate harddrive, 1 x 250 gb Maxtor harddrive
Sapphire radeon X800 Pro 256 mb video card
Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card
1.5 gigs Ram
450 watt power supply

Here's what you can do, to determine whether the problem is on yours, or on RO's end:

- backup all your *.ini files (...:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\red orchestra\System)
- delete that System-folder entirely
- verify game cache through Steam
- put your backup-ini files back (let them overwrite)

Does this happen when you are not running Xfire, Msn, Aim and any other excessive unneeded programs in the background ?

Just to make sure !

Nope I have never used and never plan to use any of those programs nor do I have any non essential bloat going on in the background. Non-windows processes going are CCC (Catalyst Control Center), Process Explorer, OO Defrag, and uphclean all which are at their latest version. My harddrive is clean, defragged, OS is updated, registry is clean and defragged. The OS runs like a champ so I can't see this problem being anything more than some sort of bug in the software. My redorchestra.log is not availible right now b/c I am at work but will post it as soon as I get home. If you check the post I linked to Yoshiro mentioned

" 'Critical: UModel::LineCheck'

Is the first line of error and I haven't seen that one before."

The game hasnt been updated recently. So most likely something else is causing it. Doesnt have to be your doing automatic update of something can cause weird things ;P

I have the automatic updates service disabled as I prefer to download and install updates manually and as you point out the game hasn't been updated for a while so this must be some sort of software bug, possibly the way the game talks to DirectX. No other intensive DirectX applications I have ever crash.

Post over at XFire, their update caused the problem. I occasionally post in a thread over there concerning this matter, but it gets very little notice. Maybe the more people that complain, maybe something will get done...

This seems like a new kind of GPF. Can people who have it please post their log files after the crash here, as well as what programs they have running on their computer. Hopefully we can try and narrow down the cause if it is a third party program that updated and is causing it.

This is on the top of my things to look into when I get back from GDC. But untill then, get those logs up and share information with each other. You might be able to figure it out before I get to it.

What log? You mean the error message?

I think he means the RO log file which can be found in your RO system folder.
It must be taken directly after a crash.

Check through a few earlier posts in this forum, you will find more than one example !
