Red orchestra in the future...

So will everybody shut the hell up so our friend Aeneas can get us more screens, footage and eventually the mod? ktnx:D

Guys Thanks very much for the replies but i feel i need to say something :). I am aware that i am very much the public face of Darkest Hour however i would hate to think that from the comments here people would accuse me of basking in the glow of all this PR. Really I am just the texture artist and PR guy for DH and i really can't take even 1/10th the credit for how awesome that mod has become.

Secondly I am also equally dedicated to Marenostrum a mod that gave me my first chance and who's devs have always been supportive friends, their for me when i needed them most. The fact that Mare Nostrum is cranking up in pace again can only be a good thing and I look forward to completing my next few projects with them.

Lastly i wish to take nothing away from the excellent job that CC, AHZ and the single mappers are doing for the community. All three of these teams/ communities will be adding a plethora of new content to Red Orchestra that can only further what i hope to see as on RO revival in the New Year.

I am however aware that many of you feel the western front should never come to RO, This of course is your opinion. I wish to thank Wilson of TWI who had some kind words for me the other day when i thought seriously about packing it in and giving up modding. Honestly guys feel free to dislike the idea of DH or MN, i really don't mind but at the end of the day i'm not forcing you to play it. I and the other devs have poured 18 months of our lives away to bring you this stuff and snide comments and threats for a free game is something I simply don't need.

Likewise to all the devs who "hate" each other or the mods i would like to extend this opportunity to put our differences aside and in the spirit of Christmas move forwards with our respective projects in peace. I'm aware many of you will probably be laughing at this but if I even reach one of the guys who I'm not the best of friends with atm it will have been worth it. On a personal note because of career paths and my GF moving over the US in the new year do not expect to see me or as much work from me after that (at least for 2weeks- 1 month).

Lets just get on with things lads, keep playing RO and enjoy a very merry Xmas.

Jay Out.

The RO players that I talk to want the mods but would prefer if they didn't compete against RO itself .

When they come out we will probably run 1 server for RO and Carpathian ( as they are able to run on same server) and 1 server for a mod on the hardware we use. ( Wish we could run both DH and MN but the hardware we have isn't good enough to run all.)

Yep lets all get along, play RO and have a Merry Xmas :)

cadyn tell them not to worry we are not competeing against RO itself, anybody that plays CC, MN, DH and Iron Europe will always play RO as its the base of which they came from. Even i still play RO just like the whole dev team and i bet the other teams do. I had a good laugh with some guys on RO server lastnight tis was so funny :D

So again Merry Christams all (a bit early but hay)

The great thing about all four of the major mod projects is that they are all unique:

- CC: A focused mod on Romanian contributions on the Eastern Front.
- DH: Opening the Western Front with D-Day+.
- MN: Desert combat in Africa bringing in the Brits and Commonwealth troops.
- MinionWorkz: more content for the stock RO game.

Our team is sharing some content with DH and willing to share with CC and MN if they wish to ask. Our team has received help from at least one member of every other team and I would guess that one of our guys has helped someone from each team as well. There is a lot of cooperative work going on across the board even if it is as simple as a guy being a member of multiple mods.

In the end, yes, the core game's player counts may diminish across the board of choices, but it will still be "RO players" playing RO. Give the teams a lot of credit for sticking at their vision and provide some encouragement through their forums or this one. You guys are going to get a lot of free content soon and don't forget that it is free...as in "FREE". Be grateful.

oh and do TW have a community manager/public relations ?
Yes, we do.

In answer to some of the only-partially-voiced comments:

1. Yoshi filled the role of "community manager" for us, but he had to pack in and head back to his home state and take care of a bunch of stuff. We haven't got the bandwidth to replace him for the time being, so...
2. I do PR (amongst other things), so I guess the "community" (I nearly mis-typed that "communist") devolves on me.

On the "mod-vs-mod" thing, as well as the "mod-vs-base-RO" and the "it isn't the Ostfront"...

Don't start on the whole mod-vs-mod thing. It is pointless and destructive. It got hideous back in the MSU days, as you can imagine. Tore whole teams apart.

Are any of the mods "better" than the base game? I should bloody well hope so - we built the thing 2 years ago! But everything is opnion-driven. Is the AB mod (too big to be a "mutator") better than the base RO armor model? Probably is to many people - they had time to go further than we did. Of course there will be individual pieces in the mods that are "better" than stock RO. I'd be very disappointed if there aren't! The AfterHourz boys are doing some stunning work on vehicles - again, stuff we don't have the time for!

"Not the Ostfront"... good. We're committed to the Great Patriotic War. Someone else can carry forward elsewhere. As I've said elsewhere - I want to see how those other fronts look and feel when done "a la Red Orchestra"!

To the mod teams: what you are all doing is HARD WORK. You get to face people bashing the **** out of you, for giving them free stuff. Been there, taken the kickings. But put the rhino-hide on and keep going - it IS worth it in the end!

Oh - where are all the devs? Working on "something new"? Of course we bloody are :p !

Well said Wilsonam, great to see active encouragement from you guys.

That's what sets you guys apart from the overcommercialised and insular others.

For me making 3 mods is a bad idea :). IMHO these developers should link the forces and make only 1 great mod. This would take much less time and would make a mod perfect. The mod would be already done long time ago I guess. So this would save the RO community, but now it's a little too late ;)

Yeah sadly in reality things don't work like this. If you read the other threads you will have heard the of "inter mod argument" term. Holding a big modding team together is not easy it doesn't work like gravity.
On the other hand the longer waiting time will bring us more diversity and as along as all mods stay alive I am happy for all their work :D

Err & what would this '1 great mod' be?

Dare I ask...

big mod teams rarely work in my experience. Too many people = too many differences of opinion thats why the teams are their current size etc. The advantage of a small dedicated team is that you can get things done efficiently and everyone knows their place and role, in big teams politics, back stabbing and general arguments cause a lot more problems and actually delay things getting released. As the old saying goes "too many cooks spoil the broth"

Add to this that many guys are working on more than one team at a time. That not only creates conflict of interest at times but it also creates bottlenecks where one guy is being counted on by many to get work done and everyone suffers a delay. That in itself should tell you how thin the talent pool is in many areas. And honestly, if it were not for some of these folks working on multiple teams, one or more teams would be surging ahead and the others going nowhere fast. If you want to contribute in the future, learn how to rig bones and animations on models. If you can learn to make models, all the better. Level designers are a dime a dozen compared to talented model makers and coders.

From my experience, the mod teams have cooperated pretty well with our vehicle team. I know we've shared ideas, models, and other components along the way with most of the teams. Everyone, hopefully, is making small gains thanks to others.

That would work only if every developer at all levels - from guy who did a texture or two a year or so ago to the guy who sees himself as a future CEO of a games company were to put aside the ego that drives them to create stuff in the first place.

If all such people were to adopt a kind of hive mentality to it and decide to produce a mod based on a particular theatre of operations then it might happen.

Imagine the fun trying to decide which theatre without there being an almighty explosion. Bit like Bart with acids and bases - "You do know what happens when you mix them, Bart?"

There was an attempt to have democratic map making - it was called redstarblackcross and it was pretty much a committee of 20 trying to make one map - the results were...well you can guess the rest :)
