I've never played any other FPSs except for Red Orchestra. Day of Defeat: Source and Counter Strike sound interesting - in what ways are they different from Red Orchestra? Also, what FPSs other than RO are the best?

Multiplayer primarily, yeah, but I wouldn't mind playing some good single player FPS either.

Really depends on what kind of game you enjoy or what kind of game you are looking for. Some play similar with different settings, some play similar with the same settings, some play completly different with the same settings.

Things range from out there arcady - quake/unreal to hardcore realistic ArmA/RO, and everything inbetween. Realistic setting with arcade gameplay and what not. If you haven't experienced much, grab the loads of demos that exist.

Wowza, are you new to the whole gaming thing? or did you just never get into the whole FPS thing for some reason?

Anyway, a little more info would be helpfull, as there is a huge back catalog of good FPS games you have never played, so knowing what you'd be into would really help narrow things down a bit.

  • Fantasy or realism? are you looking for war games, with people who look like people and places that look like real places, or is Sci-Fi also good? with strange alien worlds and creatures, maybe even magic and stuff like that?
  • How important is realism in realistic games to you? should they be clouse to a simulation feel, or is hollywood style action movie stuff your thing?
  • Graphics? can you enjoy a good game despite dated or perhabs even downright old graphics? or must they look next gen before you can get into it?
  • RPG elements? is that your thing or would it just annoy you?
  • Any specific time frame, war, or setting you would be interested in?
  • Anything else you could think of?
It might be a bit tricky to specify what you'd like when you don't have much experiance with it, but give it a go, and then we can hopefully steer you in the direction of something you will enjoy ;)

I'm new just to the FPS thing (if you don't count Thief as a FPS). Anyway, Red Orchestra is pretty much the ideal FPS game for me, which is to say, I want as much realism as possible, enjoy good graphics but they are hardly a necessity, don't care either way about RPG elements, and like FPSs set in the World Wars, but wouldn't mind anything else? Which single player FPSs fit that description?
Also, on the multiplayer side, if I wanted to try something besides Red Orchestra, what would you recommend?

Day of Defeat is fun.
Stalker is well worth a go.
Armed Assault needs a lot of dedication but can be rewarding.

What the hell? I've already typed a reply and it didn't register. :\
Anyway, Red Orchestra is pretty much the ideal shooter for me, which is to say I love having as much realism as possible. I don't care either way about RPG elements, and I find the world wars more interesting, but I wouldn't mind trying anything else. Which single player FPSs fit the description? So far ArmA and OF look interesting.

Also, if I were to try another multiplayer FPS, which would you say is the best?

Well to be blunt, CS:Source and DoD:Source might not be ideal for you then, lots of people find them fun, but i don't think even their most dedicated fans would argue that they are as realistic as RO, or even ment to be, they are much more focused on fast paced action, mostly taking place in smaller urban maps, and everything from playerspeed to animations are alot faster.

OFP and ARMA are definately worth checking out though! they are probably what can best be described as "simulators" in the genre.
OFP ofcourse is somewhat dated now, but that works both for and against it, the grpahics are somewhat outdated, but it also has a huge catalog of mods avalible for it, adding new missions, new vehicals, new theaters of war, allmost anything really, so its definately good bang for your buck!

ARMA is newer ofcourse, and sadly, still has its fair share of technical problems.. hence the need for dedication, you might have to work a bit for it to get it running well on your system.

The AI in both games can be a bit hit or miss though, they are best played cooperatively with freinds online, but are fully playable offline too, you just have to accept that the AI might sometimes need some promting to do things or do some stupid things from time to time.

The Rainbow-Six/Ghost Recon games should also be right up your ally, but stick to the older ones, the realism has been dumbed down quite a bit since the "Vegas" titles hit, the old ones are where it's at.

"Vietcong" and its expansion is also good if you kan dig the whole 'nam thing, but only the first game and its expansion (you can get both in the "Vietcang: Purple haze" package), Vietcong2 was rubbish though, so don't even go there..

Thouse should get you started i'd say, they are must haves if you love realistic FPS games, so you might aswell start collecting! ;)

It's a little late now, but you still might want to buy one of those games that give you access to the Source SDK and Orangebox SDK. Simply because you will be able to download a variety of free FPS mods. Insurgency and Resistance and Liberation for example, which are relatively similar to RO.

Day of Defeat Source is one of those games.

Not wanting to blow my own horn to much, i think you might like some of the stuff on my website.
Basically what ive done is write a review for games that i think are good and realistic ( or realistic enough ), and include gameplay footage with that etc.
RO is on there too, as well as Operation Flashpoint and ArmA (wich got suggested here allready) and other stuff.
So have a look, see if there is anything you like :)

While DOD and CS aren't made for realistic that dosen't mean they are bad games, they are actually very good games. If I was going to recommend any first person shooter it would be Half-Life 1, it's one of the best FPS shooters I've ever played.
