Um, so I played Red October for the first time today...Dear god.

Is this a map or a shooting gallery for the Germans? The first building is...How are the Russians even supposed to take it? The building is made of brick, so even if you decided to stay back and spray with an MG, you're not going to go through the walls, the front is covered with excellent openings for them to shoot out of, and the building is pitch black, making it damn near impossible to see anyone in it.

This building overlooks a wide open field that the Russians have to get through, and even when a squad leader throws smoke, the Germans on the top level of the building are still able to see you coming out of the spawn. So when they have someone good on the machine gun up there, they're nearly unstoppable killers.

This wasn't a problem with an incompetent team, I mean, I had played with them through several maps and everyone seemed fairly good at the game. But when the Germans lost only a handful of reinforcements, while the Russians lose over half their reinforcements, I think something is horribly wrong there.

The only kills I got was when I hopped into the tank and basically smashed into the building, and started firing HE rounds like nuts. Even then, someone dropped an explosive on me and got me. I wasn't able to get up that close again.

Even when smoke was out, the only time it seemed to work at all was when I was actually in the midst of it. Smoke tossed out into the middle of the field just blocks the lower windows from seeing you. The top windows can just see right over it.

Get an MG and suppress those windows. The first objective is pretty easy IMHO. The next objectives that are tough.

actually the russians can cap the first objective just by sticking to the walls from the outside they don't even need to enter the building. Never had much problem with the first objective.

Send some to flank left and right, a rifleman or two with your team's snipers/MGs to pop any heads that stick out of the upper windows. Everyone else, get your butt to the wall at the edge of the cap zone.

Usually win this map when playing Komandir. The trick is to get smoke in FRONT of the Germans so they can't see us flanking, and pound them with mortars.

This map really requires a good TL for smoke and fire support.

This was my reply to a thread complaining about Fallen Fighters but it applies to this map as well.......

Smoke......smoke.........and smoke some more.

Play with some competent squad leaders who use it and you'll see the beauty of that map. The thrill of crawling on your belly just to pop up and cap a zone or cap a building-jockey (sniper hiding in a window or streetcar) while bullets are whizzing around your head is hard to top.

In fact the intesity of the conflict that can be created on the maps (open area maps in RO2) that FORCE you to use smoke is something sorely missing from the the others (such as apartments or pavlovs house) in my opinion.

:D

EDIT:

My favourite maps in no particular order:

Fallen Fighters
Spartanovka
Red October Factory

My least favourite maps also in no particular order:

Barracks
Apartments
Pavlovs House

If you smoke and use artillery properly, the first building falls pretty fast in my experience.

There's a bug that allows people to see through smoke, it's happened to me a few times and is likely reproducible if someone was motivated to reproduce it. Whenever it happens to me I start making people rage quit (for good reason), but the fact that I get it made me realize why it is that smoke is so useless often.

Funny you should say this.

Reason being, I usually play the Germans, and I find that Red October Factory is the map I lose the most often...

This. A good Russian commander is the most important thing for this map of any map. Since Russian arty is on 4 min cd and german is on 10 min. I've been playing engi (prob the most important lvl for a good engi) lately and still winning though.

Russian commander needs to drop arty right in the middle of the gap in A and the team rushes mostly left or right side. It should be an easy cap with arty support. Same for C drop it right in the middle and have your team pile just inside of the capzone while the germans die to arty. The four later caps you need to drop arty behind the objective so the germans can't retake it for a good minute if its the first objective in the pair. That gives you a minute+ to take the second. I think this map is my longest active win streak as a side (Russians) at around 8? I've been constantly winning it as Russians lately, but used to hold it to lockdown a lot when I played german MG, which I haven't done much lately.

This map and Spartanova are the ones where a good commander w/ good arty makes the most difference.

i can't believe people haven't figured out how easy it is to get into A spawn without smoke.

You can do it everytime without stopping sprinting without even someone shooting at you, seriously.

Just run down the hill to the left around the little hole in the wall straight up to wall, easiest objective. Need sappers to open up the walls though to get in if the other team is decent but numbers cap it every time.

Was just playing this map before. This is how we did it. Half the team lines the wall to cap it and other half goes around and engages the Germans to put them off. Easy.

I freakin' love Red October!! Playing as either side is enjoyable. I love the atmosphere of the map, it almost feels like you are crawling through piles of rubble, trying to kill enemies that appear and disappear through shadows and light.

Funny how the hard maps often become my favorites ;).

This is one of them...

I usually end up playing germans as one of my two regular RO2 buddies only ever wants to play german. Yesterday he wasn't there so me and the other guy went soviet, him squadleader as usual. We really didn't understand how we always won so easy as germans on this map, as we really just stomped over the germans.

The axis fanatic buddy, always keep saying that the problem with the soviet team is they hang back far too much and have the wrong mentality which get reinforced by map designs. I think he might be right, as when me and my friend (who always plays squadleader) join a team we usually start pushing down objectives at a pretty decent rate.

And I think this is the crux of the problem the soviet team might have, is a lack of experienced squadleaders who rally their squad and move up. Because we definitely didn't have too much trouble, not more than normal. Men need to be lead in this game, else they will just "cower" in a building half the game. Pretty realistic imho!

Fallenfighters is a map where I think the level design is hugely in favor of the russians, but because its so much in favor of them due to lighting and setup they just sit in the spawn buildings as it provides such an awesome firebase. Why take the risk of death when you can just sit there and farm kills? Well because you lose the map, but most players worry more about getting kills. When we play the map as germans we always move the squad up towards their spawn building, throw out smokes, pull out the grenades and charge+throw grenades. Then we proceed to go upstairs in the building and stab and bludgeon all the soviet campers to death. No shooting allowed unless its absolutely necessary, as it alerts people. I seriously have gotten 8-12 kills up there just stabbing.

So grab a buddy and start playing like a team, and you will win the maps easy.
