wow. That is pretty cool. I didn't know that lasers had become that powerful. I wonder if they are any other uses for this tech besides military.

Isn't there also a Boeing 747 with a laser mounted in it? So in a way nothing new or special

..and speaking of comments - the golden ones are from the guy who thinks a pilot could out manuever this thing.

With nothing new or special I meant that it is the way to go now. The idea of laser weapons is worked on for a time now (obviously)

The significant thing is that this is the first actual test of the actual Phalanx Laser system against a moving aircraft. At sea, too, where the atmospheric conditions are different from on terra firma in a lab.

I seem to remember they tested a version of this about 20 years ago but the target would only combust if it was painted red and flew in a straight line whilst being targeted for about 30 seconds... clearly things have come along since then.
