Tactics Ramming Tanks

Ramming was a valid tactic used in ww2.
Light vehicles, guns, even planes on the ground. Its faster and simpler to just drive over them than try to damage each one with HE.
Now tank vs tank ramming was a desperation move. If you find yourself with diabled gun or fighting a superior tank.
The idea is to use strong (and rather pointed) front corner of your hull and hit a weaker spot on enemy tank. Given the huge mass and enough speed it results in damaging the track and wheels of your target, damaging fuel tanks or engine, disabling the turret or even causing ammo to explode. And of course concussion to the crew - being hit by 30 ton steel beast at 30-40 kph is quite a bang.

There is a small chance that your own tank will stay operating, if the driver is skilled enough and doesn't shed the track or damage front wheel.

Often it was T-34 doing the ramming due to its superior mobility.

In game? I'm glad its not implemented. Saves us from every noob trying to drive into you.

Ramming tanks is way more fun than shooting them :D

They should make it so that if you don't stop your tank, get out, shake hands with the enemy tank crew, exchange insurance information, survey the damage and make sure that nobody is hurt, you loose 500 points. If you do all this, you gain 500 points.

But seriously tank ramming should do damage.

Although I should rephrase this ramming is great when used in conjunction with a partner going up against a Tiger or JS. I've often been able to get a beasty to reveal it's soft bits to a team mate resulting in a seemingly improbale kill. The only donwside to ramming is that many victims scream foul and call for a kick vote against you.

There is one tactic I use on a map that will free an immobile tank... can't remember the name of the map though...

But, if you play as the Germans you are allowed the use of one panzer at a time that respawns after it is destroyed and one STuG that is "immobile" because it has sandbags in front and behind the tracks. Well, on day I was playing the map and got the idea of ramming the STuG from the side over and over again to see if I could jar it lose from the sandbags... it WORKED!!! We then had an extra piece of armor that could do more than just sit in a "fixed" position.

Call this cheating if you want cause the map designer clearly had it in mind for the STuG to stay put but we were just doing what we had to do to free the armor from the bags!

Now we just have to take it to the next level. Come alongside of the tank, exchange some paint and then have your tank riders board it!

Arrrrrr!

And I do hate the clown car ramming tactic. Everytime I see it bouncing around like it came right out of Carmageddon I wish it would just explode in a giant fireball upon impact.

Sherman mets King Tiger

Sherman mets King Tiger

Whilst taking part in Operation Goodwood east of Cagny, Lt John Gorman who was a Troop Commander in the 2nd Armoured Battalion was probing forward in his Sherman tank 'Ballyragget' when suddenly he found himself broadside to a German King Tiger , the massive German tank that no-one had yet seen. On seeing the tank he gave the order to fire his 75mm gun at it but it just bounced off the armour of the great German monster. On giving the order to fire again he was informed by the gunner that the gun was jammed and could not fire again. By now the German Tiger Tank was traversing his 88m gun onto the defenceless Sherman tank. On seeing this Lt Gorman ordered his driver L/Cpl James Brown to ram the Tiger Tank. Ballyragget struck the German tank amidships disabling the tank and causing it's crew to bail out. After seeing his own crew to saftey, Lt Gorman commandeered a Firefly, 'Ballymena', whose commander had been killed and continued to fire at the Tiger tank with his new-found 18 pounder gun until it's destruction was complete. For this action Lt John Gorman was awarded the Military Cross and his driver L/Cpl James Brown was awarded the Military Medal.

I read this thread, read the research and wondered if it works in RO

Here are the final results of me ramming the Tiger on Konigsplatz a few times (with a t34/85)

I don't know how long tinypic keeps your images, but check it out still :)

You cant knock over a Tiger it seems, but this apparantly CAN happen.

Don't discount the possibility of knocking over a tiger that's on a hill! I may have to test this too.
